Hi buellers. Just joined the forum and I must say, it's way better than the xv1000 forum... I bought my S1 lightning about a month ago. It first was hard to shift gears up from 2nd to 3rd and down. Now last weekend it started to whine and grind when I shift to second. Also feels like it skips teeth from the primary chain. So I then read a couple of threads and checked the tension and condition of the chain. Also changed the oil. The oil that came out was thin and black and had some metal filings. But still the sound is there. Any ideas what I can do or do I start looking for a gear replacement? | ||

I think you are going to have to get into the primary to diagnose much. Could be worn gears, Could be the detent plate or shifter drum. | ||

Does it just hop a tooth once per shift? Or more than once? If just once, it is probably worn mating dogs on the second gear pair. Not a trivial job, but since you have a tuber, you don't have to split the cases. (Message edited by reepicheep on February 16, 2015) | ||

Whining sounds like a loose primary chain. One hop would be worn gear dogs. Multiple hops could be *really* worn gear dogs, a belt missing teeth, or I suppose a REALLY REALLY loose primary chain, but I'm not sure the primary chain can ever actually get that loose. | ||

A tight primary chain will also make a weird noise. If it's adjusted wrong too much, it will alter the shifting of the tranny. Opening that little inspection window should be the first step. | ||

THANKS FOR THE MANUAL!!! JUST SEE HOW THAT HELPED!!! Ive opened her up and found the detent arm has been snapped off and re-engineered... Then noticed the main shaft has snapped off clean as well... im trying to post the pics. So my question to you gents is: what is the cheapest and best way to solve my problem? | ||

If you resized the images to 800x600 pixels or so, they should upload quickly. | ||

I post them to Facebook and then use imagelink to post the photo using the Facebook image url. Automatically resizes. | ||
