This is obviously not good. The PO apparently repaired an exhaust stud which has now failed. So I will be dropping the engine and removing at least one head. I am a terrible wrench so I am paying for labor. I am thinking of having both heads ported and polished by a machine shop I trust and upgrading to XB rocker boxes. Am I missing any other low incremental cost opportunities or good ideas. Thanks in advance.

"Terrible wrench" The only way to be a great wrench is first, accept that there is ALWAYS something to learn.... Second.... Start learning!!! These bikes really are good bikes to learn on, and there are some very willing folks here to help. How about..., find a shop you trust.... As a back out plan, and dig in!!!! If you truly run into the brick wall, box it up and take it in.... My guess is you will learn a lot and figure out how to do this yourself, 90.00 an hour shop fees buys a lot of tools and parts! We're all here to help! |

Ya^^^ if you're really a cheap SOB it helps too. I'm still not a great wrench, but now I know which end of a wrench to use when driving a nail in. |

I'm elbows deep in a rebuild that just a few years ago I would never have attempted. The only parts I'm NOT taking apart are the engine cases and crank assembly. This: To this: Tomorrow's project is to pull the timing chest and cover, pull the keepers and lifters, pull the push rod tube bases, clean, prep, prime and paint the case. So far, I haven't run into anything "scary". Now, I am concerned about getting the cams back in the right place, getting the engine all buttoned back up, and tuning the carb and setting the timing. |

You could probably repair that in place if you wanted to try. Get one of the custom drill guide tools and some left handed drill bits and take your time. It's not a real mess until you shear off an easy out in there, and I've done that twice (well, the second one was actually a broken tap, but same difference) and recovered it both times without removing the head. |

what Reep said. guide tool and a few bits and your golden…Of course if you want to get knee deep, I think the NHRS bases are a must, just because I think they look cool. |

Even if you pay to have the stud removed, the head can be removed with the engine in place. |

Doesn't removing the head require removing one of the engine mounts and rotating the engine downward? I plan to port and polish the heads and get XB rocker covers. |
