VHT SP998 is the color I painted my headers. Pictures don't do it justice. You picked a great color! |

You reusing any of your hardware? If so, how are you cleaning it? |

I would say the hardware was the most time consuming, labor intensive part so far both on this bike & the PMX. Degreased Tumbled in HF tumbler w walnut shells & sand HOURS Wire wheel on bench grinder every nut, bolt & washer Than off for re-plating Sorting Bag & tag Ziplock's & takeout trays are your friend ))

I use wood deck brightener (Oxalic Acid) to clean and remove rust from hardware and other metal parts, not aluminum, when restoring old bicycles. It doesn't affect plating or discolor the parts. You can also get Oxalic Acid powder and mix your own if you need a large amount for big pieces. Soak degreased parts and rinse with water, usually takes a few minutes to overnight depending parts condition, experiment. A gallon of this is $10 at Menards, use undiluted. That's quite a feat! I'd be incredibly nervous about not knowing which screw/bolt/nut/washer goes back to which part of the bike, even if I got them all bagged up like that. How much sorting/segregating are you doing? How easy do you think it'll be to get each one back to its original home? |

I would give the acid test a try on something else, but imo nothing compares to prep & new plating. Everything looks BETTER than new. I sorted by size & type, not that hard to figure where they go, lots of pix & most older manuals have hardware descriptions in the back. |
