Might be making that noise since the wheel has no load on it. Try doing the same thing but have someone apply some rear brake to load up the gears and see if it goes away. Might just be the slop on the trans dog teeth. | ||

That's what I had decided so I put it down and rode it. It sounds much better. | ||

sounds like a bearing flat spotting. rear wheel and/or drive belt idler pulley bearings? | ||

If you are due for new tires, you should check your wheel bearings, both wheels! If you've just installed new bearings, could it be that the axle spacer is pushed in too tight to the ID of the races? Never bottom out the spacer harshly against the other bearing. A light touch when installing bearings will make all the difference. | ||

What Mcelhaney14 said. The bike will also make a "rocks in a blender" noise sometimes while idling in neutral with the clutch out. Pull the clutch lever in and the noise goes away. It's backlash in the tranny gears. Normal. | ||

Hey mine made the same noise. Dean mentioned that I check the cush drive. I got rid of it before I could find out what it was. Are you sure it was the bearings? I had just put new bearings in mine. | ||

There is a lot of slop between the dogs on the gears in the transmission and these will make noise when the tranny is not under load. To feel what I'm talking about, Put the not running bike in gear and rock it back and forth. The play you feel is the space between the dogs. | ||

The noise on the stand was trans noises I'm sure, just as Rob said. But I could hear a definite click while riding the bike. Changing the rear bearings did fix it. | ||

I started a new thread on this subject and I hope I'm not seen to be spamming my problem, but I found this thread while researching so I'll ask here. What are the chances of the cush drive going wrong? My 08 R suddenly started making the "rocks in a blender" noise when I let the clutch out like Sparky and CaptJoe have described. The sound is on the left of the motor so I thought rotor nut backing off was it. The thing is, if it was the rotor nut, the position of the clutch would make no difference in the sound right? This is why I'd like to check the cush drive first. It's on the left side of the engine and it's coupled to the engine through the clutch so it seems logical to suspect it. If I can ride it safely with out a repair I will. I just don't want to total the engine, or lock up the rear and see how long my body takes to heal these days. (booo) This bike is my everyday commuter so I need to assess the issue and correct it if it's broke or live with it if it's not. Once again I appreciate all the assistance I get from you guys. | ||

It's what Mcelhaney, Sparky and Rodrob said. This is the sound ALL motorcycles make when on a stand, transmission is engaged, and wheel is spinning. Under these conditions This Buell is making the sound all bikes make. | ||

I want to believe Duanelr. I do. It's just that between the year of our Lord two thousand and eight and three days ago it didn't make that totally normal sound. At no point in this bikes life has it ever just suddenly started playing 16th notes on the side of the engine with hammers. This sudden change of state makes me believe that something has indeed come undone. So how can I practically examine this? What can I do to prove that this is slop in the dogs and thus harmless? I appreciate the input Duanelr. There are others telling me the same thing you are. If this is normal I will be happy to ride it again. I'm using the wife's PanzerWagen to commute and you can't lane split in a BMW X5 which sucks. | ||
