Hi all! I'm about ready to start the paintwork on all the plastics for my X1 project. I've done plenty of auto painting on metal parts but not much on plastic stuff. The few times I did paint plastic bumpers I added a flex additive but it always seemed to cause issues. What have you guys done on your stuff? I hope to use some high build polyester primer and finish it off with a two stage paint. Thanks Bill |

I've only used spray paint, on two different S2s. It came out pretty decent though. Always washed and sanded and washed again the bodywork first. |

They krylon paint for plastics works pretty good for adhesion. I've used their semi-gloss black for a pew pieces I just wanted blacked out. A flex additive is useful since the [Surlyn color molded bodywork] plastics are pretty flexible. If you have the bodywork from a 99, those bits are more rigid and hold paint a little better but sometimes get stress fractures from the bikes' shaking. There is a paint procedure outlined in the knowledge vault, it's pretty specific for dealing with the nylon tanks that can bubble, you won't have that issue with the X1 tank cover. |

I have 3 sets of plastics for my X1 and have painted all of them with base/clear. No issues, no flex additive used. First set and my old r1 I used my hvlp gun... the latest 2 since I only have a tank cover and front fender, I just get the paint mixed and put in a spray can and get a can of 2k 2 part clear in a can. Both lay out great just like using a hvlp gun. For primer I also use now just the sand able SEM primer. Getting ready to do a fort set of plastics for this season. They make great garage art and fun to change the look of your bike all the time. |

Thanks for the help guys. I do have the early bodywork that was painted from the factory so that is good. I'll check out the KV as well. |
