I have a chance to buy a complete rolling chassis 1999 Cyclone M2 without the motor. My question is what year of Buell motors would fit it? Pat |

Any carb'd tube frame motor should drop right in. That would be the easiest path. The FI motor would drop in, but you would have to do a carb conversion. Maybe just a carb and tuning, maybe a cam change as well. You could probably drop a Sportster motor in as well, but I think you would have to change the heads (or machine in a mounting hole), and by the time you brought them up to "Buell Stock" spec, you would have spent more than you saved by not getting a tuber motor. |

A FI motor can be made to work if you re-wire to use a FI ECM. You will have to get a S3 or X1 header and wire harness or else run new wires to the coil, head temperature sensor, airbox sensors, leanstand and bank angle switches, fuel gauge, and fuel level and engine warning lights. The coil and cam position sensor will also need to be replaced. |

Quite true. In-line pump will not achieve 50 psi. M2 tank can be modified to accept a Mustang or FI Buell pump. Drill two holes, plug petcock hole. Minor mod compared to the re-wiring. |

I don't think sportster have the bolt holes in the front head for the mount |

Can also use the FI tube motors but switch the cam cup and you should be good. I put a X1 motor in my M2. |

Sportsters do have the front head bolt holes. Originally they were bolted thru the two down-tubes of the early cradle frame. I'm guessing the guy that liked racing bikes influenced H-Ds rubber mounted design |

I don't remember whether up sized or down on the bolt diameter but the I think the Buell rear 4 mounting bolts were a larger diameter bolt than the Sportster. I'm fairly sure I had to drill out a hardtail Sportster frame rear bolt holes to mount a Buell engine in it. |

I was looking at my sons sportster and the M2, sportster heads bolts are smaller. |

'91-'03 Sportsters have basically the same motors dimensionally, with the differences being the bolt hole sizes on the rear mounting bolts as Bert mentioned. I think some had smaller bolts in the front motor mount as well but I could be wrong. Functionally, all the '96-'02 Buell motors are better performers than the Sportster counterparts, except '96 S2 and S2T, which had bone stock spec Sportster motors. |
