I just purchased an '08 XB12R with 1,600 miles on the clock. 100% bone-stock. PO stated that it needed a new battery, and the CEL was on for that reason. It was dark... I was too trusting... My bad. Replaced the battery today, jumped pins 1 & 2 and received the following errors: 21, 33, 34, 47. These are exactly the same codes displayed with the old battery. I checked, and the muffler servo cycles when ignition is turned on. The bike appears to run fine... Idles well, accelerates with no problem. FiremanJim is booked solid for the week, so I cant 'buy a vowel'... I have the stock ECM's for my '08 Uly and my '09 Ss. Was thinking of swapping one of those. Any thoughts about which would be best? Other than the ECM, suggestions? I need to figure this out while I still have contact with the PO. Thanks! (Message edited by Bueller_bueller on January 28, 2015) |

Don't start blindly swapping parts. Clear the codes, see which ones come back, look them up and start tracking them down. If it is running well, and with that low a milage, it is likely nothing serious. |

What Reep says. Code 21- Exh valve actuator Code 33- Fuel pump circuit Code 34- Idle air control Code 47- Aux relay driver circuit The first 3 will definitely affect driveability, and you are not having those issues. Code 47 has to do with the acc plug-ins for GPS, ect. Low batt voltage can cause various codes. Go ahead and clear yours and ride. Hope this helps, Dave |

Low battery can confuse the ECM causing all kinds of false errors, so like said above try clearing them out first. Disconnecting the battery does not clear the codes (hence why you see them with a new battery), you either need to start the bike 50 times or use a program like ECMspy/Tunerpro. Once cleared, take it for a ride and see how it runs and if any more codes appear. That said, if you want to swap ECMs, all 3 of your bikes use the same ECM so it doesn't matter how you swap it. |

Thanks, guys... That is all great information. I had tried to clear the codes by cycling the ignition 50 times, but I may have been too quick about it. Since I'm now officially a 'collector' I guess I'd better dive into ECMspy or TunerPro. Seriously, I'm grateful for your help. I was blithely confident when I bought it... That changed rapidly, so thanks for talking me down off the wall... I'll do exactly as you suggest. |

Thanks, Dave- here's the update- I just put in the ECM from my Ss. Did a TPS reset. The bike fired right up, although it ran roughly. I presume that's to be expected. Soon the CEL came on. I ran it a bit longer, then shut it off and pulled the error codes. Everything is clear so far, with the exception of Code 47. I'll do some searching online, for the possible cause. I didn't think I had an accessory plug for GPS... I used the ECM from the Ss opposed to the one from the Uly for that very reason... Update 2: So there is an auxiliary relay... The ECM apparently monitors the voltage. Is it one of the four small, grey relays in the box below the left handlebar? If so, I'll stop by Harley and grab a replacement on the way home from work.. If not, where is it located? I haven't found it yet, in the service manual... (Message edited by Bueller_bueller on January 29, 2015) |

Epilogue: Well learned a few things... Like where the relays are, Hint: the relax box has pictures an text that tells you which is which... Duh! Anyway, replaced the Aux relay and the CEL when the out. An oil change and a bath and it runs/rides like a dream. I will have to confess that the riding position is less comfortable than when I was younger... Again, my sincere thanks to everyone for your help and advice. |
