Been looking for a thread I seem to recall , where only the rear rocker box had to be removed to do this, as opposed to this one, http://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/artikelen.asp?cid=20 &aid=620 Anyone have a link, do I need to rotate engine as described in the twinmc post? This is an S2 I'm dealing with. Thanks. (Message edited by johnod on January 12, 2015) |

I think they show the procedure for XB motor which I believe needs to be rotated. |

On an XB you definitely have to rotate the motor. You don't on a tuber. You have to unload the rocker boxes in order to get the cam cover back on (and you should probably do it before you pull the cam off also to protect the bushings). Only the older XB's (pre 06 I think) should need that oil pump replaced. The newer ones used the updgraded material. |

Well ,why not doing both rocker boxes/rocker arm assemblies? It's not that much more work to do ,and it's good to have both fitted with new gaskets! |

Once you are that far, it's not much more work. It also lets you pull and inspect things like rocker arms and pushrods. So an extra 20 minutes of work, and another $40 in gaskets. |

I have a job guide I built that walks the most inexperienced through this procedure and couples it with doing the XB rocker box cover and gasket change upgrade. It started out as a job guide for how to simply change the XB style rocker box cover and as soon as I started writing it, it grew... so it lists the oil pump drive gear as a job that should be accomplished in the opening, but it completely walks you through the process from start to finish with pictures and arrows... PM me for a copy. it does not go into finite details like torque settings etc as it is meant to accompany the service manual. lists parts (not by part number) and tools required |

Talking about rocker box covers ,could it be possible to convert the old/tuber style covers to the xb style? ,so drilling a hole in them and putting in a rubber and breather valve. |

Just buy the xb conversion or xb covers and parts |

Sounds like getting w/Jolly is the way to go. Not a bad job. Remove the fuel tank, exhaust. Put the cyl of choice on TDC on compression stroke, remove the rocker box. Rotate the crank so the other cyl is at TDC on compression, and the gearbox cover can come off. Not much more work to take this rocker box off, since you are there. Don't forget to get with Al at American Sport Bike and get the crankshaft holding tool. Makes the job So Much Easier. One more note- Don't get too excited if the engine really sounds bad on start up. Mine did, and I almost took it back apart, as I just knew something was not right. Thought about it some more, and decided one or more of the lifters had bled down. A sedate, sub 3k RPM lap around the block solved the issue. Hope this helps, Dave |

Xb rocker upgrade see American Sport Bike it helps the engine breath and gives a solution to the oil into the air filter |

One focus for me in removing both rocker boxes was the possibility of having a cam come out with the gearcase cover, or a 'garage gremlin' throwing a cam on the floor. Having both boxes off allowed me to put the cams on the bench, do the work, and then put the cams back in per the shop manual. Easy that way to make sure the cams were timed properly. Hope this helps, Dave |

I tried to do the "remove one rocker cover only" trick when I changed the oil pump drive gear on my S3, but there was apparently still significant pressure on the lifters and one or more cams pulled out when I removed the cam cover. I wound up having to pull the front rocker cover, replace that gasket, and reinstall the cams anyway. I'd guess it's just easier to plan on doing all that from the start. |

"...helps the engine breath and gives a solution to the oil into the air filter.." I think the engine breathes pretty well as it is without this mod and you'll still end up getting a catch can...Your money your bike. |
