Speaking of valvetrain,would roller rockers be worth the cost?I'm guessing that the whole valvetrain would have to be changed over. | ||

Unless you have radical high lift cams, you don't really need roller rockers. They are a durability enhancement for high performance engines. They don't provide any significant boost to performance. | ||

tried rollers rockers. they were most excellent on my S3, until the lifter went and took 'em out. | ||

S3t, I have a 2001 S3 (w/4500 miles) and mine makes a lot of racket also. I have taken it down to the shop a couple of times and they said that's the way there're suppose to sound. Still bothers me though... I find that my full face helmet and 30 NRR earplugs make my tuber run faster!!! g u s | ||

On my '04 XB12, I hear a rocker type of sound under acceleration at 4,000. I asked the dealer twice and they say it's normal. I was actually going to post and ask about it, but you beat me to it. I was curious if they had solid lifters, but understand they're actually hydraulic. Anyway, I guess it's normal afterall? | ||

Yes, it is normal. Someone in the know posted this a while back, I'll try to regurgitate it. The noise you are hearing is most likely the cam gears clicking as the valvespring puts pressure on the gear as the lifter hits the back side of the lobe. In a stock sporty motor, there are a number of differently sized gears available that the assembler can mix and match to achieve a "chatter free" fit for the gears. The cams in the Buells were not made in high enough numbers to warrant making 5 different sizes of cam gears, so there is a little slop between the teeth. So the noise you're hearing is actually being generated at the cams, it's just being heard at the pushrods and rockers because there is less metal there to block the noise. I've probably not got that exactly right, but I'm sure someone will correct me. Jeff | ||

I agree that they're noisier than desirable. My '99 seems louder than the '98 I had a few years back, and I've wondered how much of that is due to the injectors. Having the helmet on and the revs up improves things greatly, but I'd gladly accept a detune in exchange for a quieter ride. I've even wondered what sliding in a normal sportster motor would do! | ||

As well as cutting your power in half. You would do the same to your torque. 2buells said it " if it ain't ticking .... it aint running." I' got over 14k on my 02 X1 and it's tune hasn't changed! I find that keeping my knees tight onto the body of the bike while I am riding makes the sound go away. | ||

An old thread rejuvenated....I haven't had any problems - but I'm only at 4,400 miles presently...I've got appx 9,000 miles this season so far, but that mileage is spread over 3 bikes..... Seems most of the input here is focused on the valve train...but the noise I hear seems to be right at the injectors...... | ||
