I recently borrowed a friend's 2001 X1 lightning while he has my M2 to replace the alternator stator. The X1 ran fine until I parked briefly. It will not start. The battery is good. The lights, horn, warning lights, and gages work. the neutral switch is working ok. The fuel pump does not make any sounds and the starter and starter solenoid also make no sounds. I bypassed the sidestand switch and clutch lever switch with no change. A quick search of the knowlege vault did not cover this scenario. Does anyone have a short list of likely places to look for the cause? |

Hate to say it but KISS. Check the fuses an most important make sure the run switch is engaging. |

Does the engine light come on? If the kill switch circuit is open the fuel pump doesn't start and the engine light doesn't come on. An open ignition fuse? (there are spares in the fuse block). Does the ignition relay click when the key (or kill switch) is turned on? Good Luck.... |

Sounds like my S3T when the ignition switch went bad. Headlights, gauges, etc. all worked, but it would not even try to crank over, no fuel pump, etc.. Try to jumper the ignition switch and see if that helps. Or turn the key on and off several times until you hear the fuel pump. |

All of the fuses are good. The engine light does come on. I don't hear any relays when the ignition is switched on. I forgot to check the kill switch. I never use them. Good suggestion! I tried switching the key a FEW times. The ignition switch is another good possibility. I left the bike at another friend's apartment. I will have to check it tomorrow. |

Sometimes the battery can have enough power to turn on lights and turn signals but not enought power to even attempt to start. Hope that helps. You can always check with a voltmeter if you have one |

If the engine light came on, then the kill switch is OK. The (bottom) relay must be clicking if the engine lamp is coming on - (and the neutral and/or clutch switch circuit is OK, and the fuse is OK). Does the headlamp dim slightly when the start button is pressed? Does the upper relay click when the start button is pressed? (Swap the two relays if it doesn't). |

Ok here is my suggestion, Very carefully... CAREFULLY I SAID!! cut the green wire... NO WAIT!! i mean Blue wire... SHIT! MAYBE IT WAS THE GREEN!!!, no RED YEAH THAT IS IT RED WIRE! if the timer doesn't stop. try this... bend over and kiss your ass good bye. ok enough of that.. just trying to lighten the mood. On a serious note, Flick the kill switch a couple times too.. along witht he ignition switch... just try it and see.. |

I have a problem with my bike not starting if it's not in neutral. Not just "clutch neutral" but actually in neutral. Don't feel bad if it's the kill switch. I very rarely use it myself. But when I do, I usually spend a few minutes trying to figure out why the bike won't start |

Ignition switch failures are pretty common and easy to diagnose. bypassing the igntion switch is pretty easy, (so easy that I am surprised more buells aren't stolen) reach behind the fairing and find the connector from the switch to the wiring harness. The male side has 3 terminals: positive ,park, run. Jumper between positive and run and you should get the fuel pump to come on.

so easy that I am surprised more buells aren't stolen People just don't steal Buells. I heard a story where an owner left his Buell parked overnight on the streets of Manhattan with the keys in it. Comes out the next morning and the bike is still there! I can't get my bike stolen. Well...not without me knowing about it, anyway. |

It was just the kill switch. Thanks to all for the helpful and entertaining responses. |

I took my bike to work right after I bought it a month ago and my supervisor Skip (big Harley guy) loved it and wanted to sit on it and fire it up so I handed him the keys. Apparently he uses that kill switch. When I jumped on it later that day to go home it took me 20 minutes to figure out why the hell my new toy wouldn't run. |

Andy, I thought that you were going to say that the next morning there was another one parked next to it. |
