So I managed to pick up a 1997 S1, along side of a MWC roller frame with a bunch of parts, I got the bike to save it from the chop as I love the way this tuber looks. It's awesome but this is my first owned bike, I've ridden before, but never had to maintain a v-twin. I love working on things and I'm a gunsmith as a trade, so I'd love to learn anything I can about working on it. Here's a link of a crappy pic, I plan on cleaning it and snapping some more later https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak- xpf1/v/t34.0-12/10754852_884140968270526_200322505 4_n.jpg?oh=5644cde8144f3bbf02cdff44a1576854&oe=545 98E9F&__gda__=1415226319_ad1aad9d08ef3d971208611b2 905e6b2 |

welcome to the dysfunction. you have good company here. first off......get that HD sticker off that tank!!!! Next, get a manual. Third, Thank you for saving that beautiful bike from a chop. You have done the motorcycle world a solid favor. Your gunsmithing background will give you all the skills you need to work on your bike and this site will fill you in on any/all gaps in Buell knowledge that you might run into. have fun |

Hahahaha, I will definitely take it off, I planned on doing the tank in a pearl white, I do kinda have a stupid question,I hear every body saying to check the drive belt tension, I don't have a drive belt. I have a chain and sprocket. |

Someone did a chain conversion somewhere in the bike's history.... |

Well, then check the chain tension Seriously - because the swing arm does not rest at the longest point of it's arc when the bike is static, it is easy to adjust the final drive too tight. Then when you ride, you are putting unnatural pressure on the Trans main drive gear, leading to failure of the part, halitosis and possibly communism. What I do on both my chain and belt drive tubers is support the bike from above (I use a cable hoist tied to the garage rafters), uncouple the shock, and move the swing arm to it's longest point perpendicular with the engine. Adjust the chain/belt at that point for correct tension, then put it back together. Once it's back together, it will be "Scary loose". That is ok. it tightens when riding. If you note the deflection after you put it back together you can skip the whole "unlink the shock" part in future services. Congrats and welcome. Saving the Tubers is a good thing to do, you will not regret it! |
