Hello all, long time no post. I was just wondering if this primary case looks cracked or if this is factory blemish or just plain normal. Somehow I doubt it. See image below and with in. All help is appreciated.

It sure looks like a connected series of cracks that are propagating. OTOH there should be little strain on them and I wouldn't think it'd result in a catastrophic failure. If there's no damage to the outside of the cover that could have caused it, I'd be tempted to keep running it. |

Good answer sir! I was thinking the same, but was very discouraged when I saw this after installing a time sert (yay me!) for a stripped primary adjustment hole (BOO!). Unless I hear strong objection to running it while I save up for a new primary cover, I'm gonna reinstall it in an hour or so. So, devils advocates? |

Okay ladies and gentlemen. Got it back together, 'cracked' primary case and everything. My last and final question: When put in gear while running, the bike whines/moans from the tranny area. Clutch adjusted too loose? Primary belt tightness/looseness issue maybe? I wasn't sure how tight to make the little flathead screw adjuster in the center of the clutch ramp assembly. Possibly this? Please advise, I need this to be working to commute to school this coming Wednesday. Thanks Hughlysses for your two cents!! Two more maybe? |

I think that's the clutch bearing. The bearing that lives between the inside and outside of the clutch basket. When you click it in gear, that bearing is now turning. When it's running in neutral, both sides of the clutch are spinning at the same speed, therefore not turning. My 2008 Ate that bearing under warranty due to water getting in the primary. The rain gets in via the rubber dingus on the clutch right behind the front wheel. Just to be sure, loosen up the chain a bit. If the sound goes away, I am wrong and you win! If I'm right and the bearing needs to go, It's not much labor to get the clutch basket off and all. |

If I'm right and the bearing needs to go, It's not much labor to get the clutch basket off and all. true...not much work...but $50 in gaskets and fluid...I was just advised the same thing to a clutch question i had because of these very symptoms...so i opened up my primary to find nothing wrong...put it all back together and adjusted the clutch again and the noise is gone....i'm pretty sure your clutch is just not adjusted right. I found it helpful to remove the actuating ramp and reinstall it. Mines working fine now. Unless you had a noise prior to your recent work...i would try to readjust that clutch. |

Oh and I think those cracks are just casting flaws. I'm pretty sure my cover had them too. |

Primary chain could be too tight too. When did this noise start, before or after the cover was off? |

Thanks for your replies everyone! Adjusted clutch and primary tension and all is working as it should. Just monitoring for leaks at this point and getting used to the feeling of riding on something I've dismantled and re-mantled. (Its disconcerting! I check all bolts and drain plugs every day now.) Thanks again! |

Be careful about over tightening, especially the drain plugs, as they are easy to strip out. |
