Purchasing a Uly with 38K on it. Very well maintained by a military jet mechanic. It comes with more spare parts then you can shake a stick at. If it was a possible wear part it was replaced or the replacement was purchased and kept for future repair. Here's a list of the current stuff on it or coming with it. Here's the list. From that list it seems that guy liked to warehouse all the ULY parts at his house and at his expense instead of letting H-D be the inventory point. I'd buy it since 2006 is the best ULY year. To buy a bike for $4K or maybe even less and with all the stuff a ULY has in just stock form is a buy in and of itself. The spare parts are gravy and icing on the ULY cake. Court's bike looks stellar and under 10,000 miles on it makes it pretty much brand new. Couldn't go wrong there either in my opinion. Guess it depends on your likes and finances. I'll tell you one thing that is absolutely true though, because of a throttle ramp change on the 08' model the 06 definitely is the stronger feeling bike when you take off from a full stop. I've ridden the 08' and it positively felt like they'd sent an 06' to the vet for a proper neutering. Anybody tells you different hasn't ridden the two year models back to back. Big difference and I really don't know why Buell engineers did that to the ULY (emissions I suppose). My 06' bike has 47,000 miles on it and has done 2 3,000+ miles trips this year alone without any problems. It still feels nice and tight and all my other past bikes (jap) except for my 97 FLH were worn out at 33,000 miles. Maybe it was the oil because I've used Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic on the Buell and Harley and they have both lasted a long time. Have no fear of the 06 and it's miles if you are able to give it a good test ride and it looks, sounds, and feels like a well taken care of ride. If the guy brags about all the wheelies he's done then you might give pause unless he's a bs artist. Ask him how many times he's had to tighten the primary chain and if the answer is only once or twice and he's kept records of his maintenance to back up the answer then the bike has probably not been beaten and is most likely a well taken care of ULY. Also ask him if the rocker box is seeping oil because he could of just cleaned the bike to hide the evidence. New rocker box seals are cheap but a bit of work to replace and really not a deal breaker. Good luck with your purchase. | ||

The great deal fell through! The bike had over 47K on it. I like the bike but 47K is a bit much even with all the extras. I've found another one in Ohio. Flight is already set for this deal. Also a 06 with 9K on it. Pretty much new. Bearings were changed in the rear wheel. Other than that its stock. Trying to find a touring windscreen for it. Don't feel like getting buffeted for a 7 hour ride. Electraglider you said you use Mobil 1 15W50. Is this for four stroke bikes or automobiles? I've always heard that using auto oil is not good. | ||

Looks nice! Where in Ohio? I'm in the Cincinnati / Dayton area (Lebanon), so if you need something and are near give me a shout. I have full tools, and access to a tire changer and trailer. When I did my fly and ride, the sellers "80% life" statement about the rear tire apparently meant "100% of the sides are good and 0% of the middle is good".  | ||

Plenty of us ULY riders use 15W50 Mobil 1 because it is way less expensive than Mobil 1 V-Twin oil and just as good. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-15W-50-5-Quart/2 0713647 | ||

Reepicheep flying into Columbus on the 10th in the AM. Purchased a touring windscreen and sent to the current owner to put on the uly for when I get there. Tires are at about dead percent! Hopefully they will make it back to eastern PA. The current Mobil 1 automotive oil in the bike is ok? | ||

Mobile 1 15w50 is fine to use in both the engine and the primary. I think a true full synthetic 20w50 like Amsoil is marginally better, but just marginally. They are both great. Even a non synthetic 20w50 would be "OK", provided you ran pretty short change intervals of like 2000 or 3000 miles. Columbus is about 80 minutes from my house, right off of 71 before you start hitting any Cincy traffic. Its south and away from PA, but not *that* far. If you want to have a new rear tire shipped to my house, I can have it waiting with a garage, tools, and a tire changer. Fly into Columbus, do the transaction, ride down here to Lebanon, and we can mount the tire and go over the bike for other potential surprises. Then I'll feed you dinner and get you settled in a motel. We have nice and cheap (shaker inn), not as nice but still safe and even cheaper (knights inn) or not that expensive and incredibly rich in history (the Golden Lamb, you can literally sleep in a room where Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill stayed). Or just turn and burn for home and keep me on ready reserve if there is an "incident" within a few hours drive. I did what you are doing, and in the middle-of-freaking-nowhere the rear tire let go. Turned out great for me, but Alex Prior ended up loosing quite a bit of beer in a deal where I interrupted his dinner and he had to drive for 3 hours... I will certainly keep you in mind Reepicheep. It all depends on if my business is busy when I leave. If it is it'll be a hit and run. I'll keep you posted as the trip draws closer. The last fly and ride I did was down to Atlanta. That was a great ride back to PA. | ||

Chances are that those D616 tires, at least the front, is cupped and might cause a bumpy ride. Depends how many miles are on the tires. | ||

I finally read the list of parts that guy bought and inventoried. What would possess someone to buy all those parts? The cost of those parts would have covered plenty of fuel and motel costs on a very long trip. I pretty much buy what I need and only after the current part fails. The only parts I have bought ahead of time is a belt and oil filters. I only bought the belt because we have two ULY's and I had Harley Visa points to blow and that covered the price. Maybe that is why the guy sold the bike, because his paranoia of bike failure got the best of him. | ||

To really check for cupping all you need do is run your fingers over those rectangular sections and if you notice low spots and high spots then that is cupping. I just got done checking my son's ULY front tire and his has slight cupping and you can't see it but you can feel it. His isn't a problem yet but I had it on my bike back when I had the stock D616 tires and it got so bad it shook the bikes front end like I was riding down the rail road tracks. Felt like a new bike when I finally changed the tires. If it can barely be felt then no real problem. Besides, you can ride on badly cupped tires but it just isn't very fun for a long ride. | ||

"What would possess someone to buy all those parts?" You spend your money...and I'll spend mine. Bike has not sold, but you can buy it if you like.  This was my forever bike therefore all the extras. It's one of 4 in the shed all total over 200K miles on them - oldest one is a 1999. I travel for work (200 days a year for the last 20 years) and when I'm home I RIDE. Don't have much time to wait 6 weeks for the Fing Harley dealer to find a part and get it shipped to me. Figured if I was going to sell, it would go to someone who would ride and enjoy it like DGRS2 and I responded to a WTB Uly on ADV rider. I screwed up the current mileage at 37-38K because I'm not home. It had a dead battery and after the wife swapped it out for me the 47,502 was more than DGRS2 was interested in. Totally my fault. Wasn't listed anyplace and I would ride it to Prudhoe Bay, AK anytime. Continue to learn a considerable amount from this forum...you included Electraglider 1997 (THANKS) and purchased MY spares accordingly. No hurt feelings here but just though you might want to see the other side of my coin and allow me to respond to your question. Flymuly is def upstanding. It was my issue with the mileage. I'm still beside my self tha t I'm not picking his up. I really really liked all the extras. I was ready the ship everything home. I'm pretty sure the bike will run forever with Tim doing the work. Trust me. I got the full run down from Chris his wife. |
