Related to another of my threads, I needed to order a new voltage regulator from HD. The dealer said the product was backordered until the 22nd, and they "say" it shipped on the 22nd, but a week later it's not at the dealership. Are they feeding me a line of bull? How long should it take to get a part from a distributor to a dealer? I could have ordered the part from American Sport Bike and had it already, even with them being on the left coast. |

Parts from my dealer usually take a week unless I have the wrong parts guy take the order and then it takes another day when they overnight the correct parts with the shipping on their dime. I'd talk to someone other than the guy who took your order to make sure the part was actually ordered. Break time may have interfered with your part being ordered and then he forgot. |

Backorder times vary by part, Harley sometimes wait till there is enough demand so they can place an order for a small run from the vendor. Assuming it wasn't on backorder your dealer can get it in a few days, but if they don't any available you never know how long it will really take to get the part. This is not a Buell specific thing, there are plenty of Harley parts that you will have to wait on too, depending on if it is something used on a current production bike or not. The situation was basically the same when the Buells were in production, for example with the VR, getting a 2008+ one in 2009 was no big deal, but there were times the 03-07 would go on backorder. American Sport Bike is pretty good about keeping more commonly needed parts in stock so we don't have to rely on the Harley parts network as much. |

OK. So a week is not unheard of then. I have been down for too long already and by the time I order one from American Sport Bike the dealer will probably have my part, not unlike jumping into the shorter line at Walmart and then that line becoming the slower of the lines. Never switch to the shorter line. It will bite you! |

Well, actually, if you'd ordered it now (17507, here: http://americansportbike.com/newdir/Item/17507 ), we would have responded that we couldn't send it because it's been on backorder at HD. It IS off of backorder right now, and we should have some on the way to us shortly. But it JUST came active near as I can tell. We keep stock on the shelves based on "normal" consumption rates, but we aren't immune to small rushes for product that wipes us out faster than we can get our next order received. And when HD goes on backorder, that can happen pretty quickly. Folks on the net figure this stuff out, and even if we aren't their go-to source, when their dealer can't get it, they get it from us and clean us out. I had 10 of these on the shelf two weeks ago and had none as of last friday. Al |

...and backorders have an "estimated release date"... |

yes, and emphasize that word ESTIMATED. Those dates are hardly cast in concrete. I've seen many a date stay the same right up to a few days after it passes, only to have two months added to it then. |

The dealer said it was shipped last Friday. Even ground delivery should have the thing at the dealer within a week anywhere in the continental USA, so I don't understand why shipping is taking so long. |
