Hey folks, Might seem like a pretty dumb question for all you Uly veterans out there, but I'm still getting used to mine (owned my '06 X for less than 1 year). There is a rubber hose seeping a very small amount of fluid onto my rear swingarm near the oil reservoir cap. What is that, and what can I do to keep that from happening? Is that a crankcase vent? Is that the hose people have been installing "catch cans" to that I've read about from time to time? I haven't been a Uly owner for very long. I haven't seen fluid dripping from the hose until this summer. The fluid is staining my swingarm. I want to prevent that from getting any worse. What can I do about that? |

Is it your fuel tank vent? Over filling the tank? |

Thats exactly what it is...the fuel tank overflow......to make it stop .....quit filling your tank so full |

Remember that gas expands when it heats up so if you gas it up and then park it in the garage, it will probably gurgle a bit. Best approach is to fill up in the morning when you can burn off a half gallon before parking it. |

Assuming its not a breather bypass mod. You fill the gas to the ring inside the tank, not to the top. When I picked up my 06 for the long pleasant ride home I filled it right up to the top and had a good puddle under the bike. Probably should of read the owners manual. |

I filled my '06's tank to the top back when it was fairly new and I was meeting up with some Buellers for my first venture to North Georgia with them. We met for breakfast a half mile from where I filled up. The sun was just coming out at 9:00 am. After we ate we all went out to the parking lot where I had attached my helmet to the helmet lock with the supplied cable. It was then 10:00 am and the temperature was up twenty degrees from when we got there with the sun shining directly on the bike. The cable let my helmet hang down just enough for that gas tank overflow to flood my helmet with probably a couple shot glasses of gasoline.....made for a tough day! I couldn't use the face shield at all. It entrapped the fumes! |

I'm surprised it didn't melt the Styrofoam in the helmet! |

Thanks all. Those answers actually covered two questions I had, but only asked one! It is probably the fuel tank overflow hose as most of you suggested. My bike wasn't modded at all as far as I know, so I'm sure it's what you say it is. The other question you guys answered (that I didn't ask) was how full to fill the tank. I always wondered how far to go with fuel (to the upper ring or lower ring inside the tank). Looks like the lower ring is the right answer. I've been only filling my tank to the lower ring out of caution, but may have gotten too close to the top of the lower ring a time or two, and certainly may have filled the tank a time or two with cold gas on a hot day and then parked the bike in the sun. Thanks again! |

Ulyful, No need to get paranoid about filling a bit past the lower ring. I've had my 06' since the end of 05' and always watch until the gas just goes over the lower ring and never really noticed a problem of fuel running out the overflow tube. If it did I'd be way more concerned with the money I just wasted than hurting the bike. Anyways, I imagine that when fueling you've got the bike tipped onto it's sidestand and then when you ride off its straight up on it's wheels and the gas level drops a bit. The one thing fuel related that you might want to keep in mind is that the fuel pump runs cooler and will last a very long time if you keep it submerged. When you go on reserve it is probably a good idea to refill with fuel within 10 miles or less. At least that is what I've always tried to do and my fuel pump has never caused a problem. |

Since I'm about to turn 59 I thought the subject "hose drip" was going to be about something entirely different. |
