I live in Tucson, AZ where the ambient temps are above 100*F a lot. I used Redline 20W50 V-twin motorcycle oil for the engine and Redline MT-90 MTL in the primary. Just broke the 50K mark and runs like a champ! |

I also use Redline 20W50 motorcycle engine oil, but I haven't tried their gear oils. How did you decide to go with the MT-90 versus the V-Twin Primary Case Oil or the V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof? |

Datasheets. Redline MTL is 75W80 transmission gear oil, which equates to roughly 5W30 engine oil. Seeing that Buell suggests 20W50 oil in the primary case, the only gear oil matching the specs of Syn3 was MT-90. I've also noticed that I could actually FEEL the transmission run a lower viscosity oil. It feels much healthier using a heavier oil. |

I use both the Redline 20W50 engine oil and Redline 75W80 transmission oil. This has been going one for at least three years now. It has been great so far. |

Mesozoic - interesting! I will read up on that as I am due for a tranny fluid change soon. Coarch, good to hear! |

I found this page very enlightening: http://easyrider.easyrider.com/syn3.htm Also, here's a datasheet indicating what the viscosity of HD Sport Trans fluid is: http://www.sfm.state.or.us/cr2k_subdb/MSDS/HARLEY_ DAVIDSON_TRANS_OIL.PDF HD specifies different alternative fluids for different transmissions. In lieu of Syn3, the Evo 1340 and TwinCam 88 transmissions can use the V-Twin Primary Chaincase series of fluids from Redline. The HD specification for Evo XL and Buell transmissions however, calls for HD Sport Trans, which is arguably, most similar to Redline MT-90. I think the final selection of which oil to use depends on the environment; folks in hot climates should use MT-90, but those in cold climates can definitely get away with MTL (80W). Either way, Redlines MTL series of oils are all formulated the same, just different viscosities for different circumstances. It is definitely the right fluid for the Buell, though. HD Sports trans: 119 cSt @ 40C, 12-13 cSt @ 100C. Redline MT-90: 90 cSt@40C, 15.6 cSt@100C Redline MT-85: 64.3 cSt@40C, 12 cSt@100C Redline MTL: 54.1 cSt@40C, 10.4 cSt@100C Do not use Shockproof or the Primary Chaincase fluids designed for the different HD transmissions in the Buell primary case! |

Gosh I like it when these come up again. Do we all agree that any oil is better than no oil/lube. The oil/lube we have now is so much better quality and consistent than available 30-40 years ago. I prefer something less expensive and change it more often so I can see if anything is changing. Most motor/engine oils are so much more consistent than back in the 60's or 70's. I know because I have removed valve covers back then and had the complete lifter rocker area's covered in parafin wax. Much better now. |

@Mesozoic, I remember reading that article shortly after I got my Buell. I am big on research, so I appreciate your information on the MT-90! |

We went through this with the tubers, and there was some evidence that certain gear oils (like Mobil 1 gear oil), while they were great gear oils, may have been hard on the stator insulation or windings. |

Here's a good read on oils: http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html Basically the recommendation is 15W 40 Diesel oil. |

Rotella T6 is good stuff, that's what I used in my older Saab and my UJM's. It's close, but isn't it a bit light for a motor rated for 20w50? It would probably work fine, but thinking about running that light oil always made me nervous. |

That article I posted has some research on what weight oil breaks down to become after 1000 miles. Some get pretty thin. |

50K on a Blaster? Dang, I wouldn't mind seeing what other high mileages people have got. As for oil, I use 10w40 Castrol 4t in both the engine and transmission. |
