Any sportster starter from 95-02 will work. I picked one up off ebay remanufactured for $100. |

My starter clutch went bad, and the prices ranged from $35 on eBay (where I bought it) to over $150. This is just for the starter clutch, not the whole starter. So shop around! Also the part numbers changed, and the starters themselves actually evolved a little bit. I couldn't dig out the cross-reference notes I kept, but it was hard to get good information. Some of the parts places with a "Does it fit your vehicle" drop down lists are simply incorrect, some lists are just incomplete. |

Be sure of what you need before buying anything. XL/Buell starter motors seldom fail in stock size motors. Starter clutches, switches and relays are more likely to fail than a motor. |

In my case, the insulation on the wire that connects the solenoid to the starter motor had a tear in it, let water in, and ruined the motor. But yeah, it's usually just the solenoid contacts. Don't even have to pull the starter to replace those. |

If you have to replace the clutch, you can separate the front and rear halves of the starter. The clutch will come out easily. Do not lose any plunger parts from the doghouse/solenoid housing, or the bearings in the front gear reduc assy |

Just put this starter from Rareelectrical in the S1 about 1500 miles ago. So far all is well. http://www.rareelectrical.com/p-9600-new-starter-m otor-buell-s2-s3-s3t-thunderbolt-s1-lightning-m2-c yclone-blast.aspx It is more powerful 1.4kw and noticeably starts the engine without the strain that the HD starter had that failed and was replaced. Took the opportunity with the primary cover off to upgrade to the heavier primary tensioner as well that Al has from American Sport Bike. |

mine just clicks alot, or doesnt seem to get enough juice, wont turn past the compression stroke usually, and when it does its really slow. brand new battery, also tried jumping it, trickle charging it for 48 hours. something is wrong with it. been starting kinda slow lately. ground wire checked also. |

Just because you buy a new battery does not mean it is a good battery ... One of the indications of a bad battery is the starter will click due to low cranking amps or voltage depending on how you want to discuss it ... Take it back and have where you bought it and have them load test it ... If it fails you get a new battery, "BUT" it passes put it on a charge for 24 hours to bring it back up and something else is wrong ... (Message edited by buellistic on August 24, 2014) |

Ricky, Disconnect the battery, and take the cap off the starter plunger cover. Inspect the plunger ring and side contacts for recession. One side contact usually wears faster than the other, forcing the plunger to rock sideways at the end of its travel. This results in intermittent starting, and, due to the weak connection, the symptom of a seemingly dead battery. |

Try replacing both Bosch relays that are under the tail and in front of the oil tank first. They're like $8. Fixed mine when a new battery didnt |

If the battery is really good, clicks a lot is most likely either the relay or starter clutch. The service manual has a easy way to tell the difference, but I can't remember what it is ! Mine was the Starter Clutch, which I'd never even heard of before. As I said, it was about $35 on eBay. |

Update, starter from Rare Electrical leaking oil past the bearings into solenoid at around 4000 miles. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/710044.html?1367044146 |
