I know a lot of guys here also own regular Harley Davidsons too. I have a 2000 XLH and in my 14 years of ownership, pretty much regular maintenance. I have developed a short that acts like a faulty ignition switch. Intermittent no starts so I replaced the switch. A couple of days later and same problem including engine quits while riding momentarily, then restarts by itself. Replaced new switch, to eliminate that part. Sometimes engine turns over and starts, sometimes clicks/pops when start switch depressed and blows the breaker. Anyone got any ideas where to look for this short? Sure would appreciate any tips. |

I've never had an HD, but the Buell and XL motors were pretty similar in that vintage, and I had an issue that sounded very similar. I finally got it traced back to the VR wiring running behind the cam cover between the oil pump. The wires would rub on the bronze oil pump fitting which has a nice sharp 90 degree angle, rubbing through the insulation and especially when warm wouldn't restart. I'm theorizing that when it was warm some oil would also help to complete the short out. All shorts regardless of where will probably act the same way though. Try the ground mounting to the frame first and work back. Electrical gremlins suck and good luck. |

HINT: To keep your wiring from chafing, doing the wiggle test while riding, or accidentally getting crimped between things, you get some tie wraps then strap, wrap, and tie everything so it stays in place and does not move !!! Put electrical grease in your electrical quick disconnects which keeps water corrosion out !!! |

I just helped a buddy with a 94 FXR in the exact same problem. Found a faulty relay/fuse for ignition, it would hear up, open, kill the circuit, then cool down and close again. We chased the switch, the ignition switch everything, finally sorted it to that relay/ fuse. |

If it pops the breaker it would either be a short (see over current) or a faulty breaker. |

I had this issue when I dyno'ed my bike in Longmont; turned out my starter cap had vibrated almost completely off! |
