Me my flashlight haven't seen wet oil origin, but hasn't fired in a few weeks. I don't think it's the rocker box gaskets again... Is there a good guess? There is oil around the rear muffler clamp. 08 Xb12x with around 15k miles... Dean 615 545 1111 texts ok Dean@learntoride.org |

Common thing seems to be starter gasket. |

Yeah, that's what I've been reading. Gonna gear it down with new sprockets & chain. I'll replace it while I'm in there... Dean |

Check the bolts for tightness first. It seems to be a fiber type gasket that could be tightened to stop leaking. Pulling the starter out of it's place is a PITA. |

+1 on loose starter bolts, I just had the same. Oil around rear muffler clamp. Torque up starter bolts - leak stop. ![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/jerkin.gif) |

starter bolts, do you take them out and smear on lock tight? what are the chances they will stay tight since they've loosened once already? I have same leak that I'm ignoring right now.

Mine likes to leak around the oil filter. I think it's the case half joins themselves. In other words, I think it will leak for some time before I bother to do anything about it. If it STOPS leaking, I will panic though! |

I took the front bolt out to use lock tite on it. The rear one has this clutch thing in the way. I used a torx bit to tighten them. Allen head wrenches don't like the angle required on the rear one. I believe the torque spec was not high enough to compensate for the fairly thick soft type of gasket that it has. |

I could swear that I used a socket on both bolts when I fixed my starter. Maybe it was a ball end socket, but it did fit. Dean, you just (well, nothing is "just")remove the primary cover to access the bolts. Don't do like I did and forget to remove the clutch adjusting screw first (why the hell won't this cover come off)!![](http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/clipart/headscratch.gif) |

Drain primary oil, remove derby clutch cover, clutch adjuster nut/spring, cable end, shifter, primary cover. The two bolts in question are near the clutch basket. The rear one will be at an angle for a tool, slightly behind the top edge of the clutch basket. If you have a service manual it will be easy to follow. You will need to adjust the clutch and clutch cable, and the primary chain upon re-installation. 1 quart of Formula+ trans oil. This is also a good time to lube the clutch cable. |
