I recently retired and decided to do all my own maintenece on my 2006 XB12X. I bought this bike 2 years ago and love it.I am leaving on an extended western trip shortly so replaced rear bearings and brake pads, new drive belt new front bearings and pads. new spark plugs NKG iridium PITA to install but they are in. My problem is I can not get the boots to seal all the way down according to manual specs, they are on and the beast runs like a champ. What am I doing wrong here. | ||

When you feel/hear the metal part clip onto the plug, at the same time the boot pushes down over the ceramic part of the plug until it seals. Usually it is where it needs to be, stopping at the same time the metal clip snaps on. The boots do not cover the whole ceramic part of the plug. | ||

I find on the rear plug you can use a 1/2" open end wrench to push the boot down onto the plug....give it a shot...it works. | ||

A little dielectric grease inside the boot makes a big difference too. | ||

Manual specs say 1/8" of ceramic visible and I am at 1/2. I used the grease on the boots and pushed them on as far as I could. The bike runs great and the boots feel secure just was wondering if could be a problem while on the road. | ||

You probably have newer boots, the originals on my '06 finally gave up recently, the replacements look different and don't fit all the way down, 1/2" sounds about right. As long as the clips are secure you're ok. |
