Such a rare, and super clean X1 (limited Buell paint at that) to be chopped. Cool build, interested to see how it goes : ).

I would be interested in the Harley switch gear if you're parting out that bike's remains btw.

That was a factory built bike that was created as a contest give-away . . . if my fading memory is correct.

I think I have the contest entry documents and bike photos somewhere . . or did.

I knew I recognized that paint job.

Nice to see some cruiser motors going the right direction again.

Probably easier to not loose you shirt on a part out of a Harley minus a motor than a Buell minus a motor anyway.

Dan Dunn has an X1 with the same paint.

So are you pulling the motor from the sportster, or the motor in sportster came out of the Buell?

The paint set was indeed a limited edition accessory paint set.

However, I do recall something along the lines of what Court is describing. I'm not sure which limited paint set it was, but I vaguely recollect a giveaway bike with a limited edition paint set on it.

So, maybe, just once - we're all right?

U mean I have to store all this stuff???

I thought at first sight that it was some bs paint job,

It is infact a wrap, has a tiny little pegasus logo ; )

The sporty is a friends bike that he is sick of, and can't get any real $$ out of as far as selling, even if it is CUSTOM ONE OF A KIND you know. He bought it cheap form his cousin who had $$ to burn a few yrs back. He wanted to redo it, but what he wants, he will never get. It will only be a BRUTAL FAST 92 SPORTY that doesn't handle with gobs and gobs of money thrown at it.

He saw the progress on PMX last week & wants me to redo an S2 for him & I just happened to have laying around. 10k miles no sig docs (he don't care) cosmetically challenged, but otherwise great shape. Second time is a charm I guess. And a lot easier when you can color outside the lines.

Sporty motor IS going in the X1 !!!
Should be interesting...

I highly doubt the FI will keep up with that motor so I'm leaving it carbed.

Any ideas on this??

Some parts will be kept from the sporty the rest will be CHOPPED & PARTED!!!!

This will probably not happen till winter, my plate is spilling over already, and it's back to Cabo for 2 weeks on Saturday.

Chopping a Harley IMAGINE THAT !!
Must be global warming.

Fess up Court ; )
U know where I live!!

Don't forget there are a few moutning holes you will have to bore out to fit the XL cases in the tuber. Other than that, enjoy!

"The paint set was indeed a limited edition accessory paint set."

Pretty sure it was part of the P&A catalog. Was something like a grand for the set.

What holes will I have to bore out??
Should be a direct bolt up... it seems to have the front mount near the oil filter with a plug in it, but I did look pretty quick.

Paint looks familiar...

That paint job was an additional option from the factory.

The paint was done in Butler WI, a Milwaukee suburb.

And from what I know about it, it was a $1200. option.

jkgonzo owns one!

The holes where the swingarm block mount are smaller on Sportster cases than tuber cases, and I believe the mounting hole for the front tie bar is not present on XL cases, but I could be wrong there.

It's not paint, unless your talking PMX??

It seems more like a WRAP on the X1 than paint, it is flaking off a bit on the tank cover, feels and looks like vinyl.

Who knows the common thread, other than coincidence between the X1 & the PMX graphics??

Very interesting.....

Court??
Dave??
Brankin??
Erik??

Interesting what some limited research turns up:
http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/47623/3 36868.html?1203471754
http://web.archive.org/web/20010612195050/www.buel l.com/products/accessories_main.asp

Common thread? There are SO MANY...
- 2 wheels
- 2 cylinders
- a seat
- a set of handlebars
- both (eventually) with modified Sportster motors
- If PMX is an RSS, the last new tube frame models from each company (Buell Motor Co., Inc. and Buell Motorcycle Company)

Yeah, that last one is kind of a stretch...

I'll have to give the common thread a little more thought,

Brankin,

I meant a common thread between the X1 & PMX paint.

Good find . . . at $2,2299 I'd bet there were none sold and that the only ones that escaped were either factory bikes sold at dealer auction or contest give-away.

I spoke to Mr. K12Pilot yesterday and told him the funniest Buell give-away story of all time.

We had a guy who won a brand new Buell in an IMS Show giveaway . . . . well, we are all conditioned to think theta everyone who wins is an enthusiast like us,

The guy came to the factory to get the bike and Miller says " would you like to meet Erik?" . . . "Erik who?". The guy wanted no tour, no meeting anybody . . . "can I just get my bike and get out of here?"

Fun stuff.

I seem to recall seeing a set on Ebay a few years back. Don't remember the price, but I remember they were listed as new...

Not a great stroke of marketing genius from Buell.

Yes I have an X1 with the same paint. It is a limited edition with each set being numbered. I think only 500 were made.

Not a great stroke of marketing genius from Buell.

Not a great stroke of marketing genius from H-D P&A.

^ There I fixed it for you!

I can only speak for the tuber days. While Buell did have some input into accessories during that timeframe, a lot of the accessories were from the H-D P&A group.

For instance...
Buell gauges were originally silver/chrome-rimmed. Then when Buell went to black-rimmed gauges, P&A came up with self-adhesive chromed covers to make the black ring chrome.

Obviously NOT Mr. "can I just get my bike and get out of here?", but I'm sure that most anyone on this board - armed with a P&A catalog from back in the day - could look through and likely identify which accessories were Buell driven and which were H-D P&A driven...

I have unopened cases of the P&A catalogs . . including the ones with the dealer pricing . . .

The funniest P&A story remains the M2 Tach Kit.

I'll bet there were not 5 of those bikes, at $2,299 a pop, made.

"...I think only 500 were made."

According to the Buell ad posted earlier, only 50 were made. If it were a "Made in Italy" brand, it would have people tripping on each other to own one...And here we have some moron chopping it for its engine... Go figure.

There was one for sale in Richmond via craigslist a few weeks ago, same paint, same condition (no motor), but listed as an S2 (I think). was a super cheap price too. Was that the one you grabbed K12? I had never seen one before that listing...
