hi all, I'm the newest member of your fine community and I'm showing up with a real headache of a problem.

march of this year I upgraded from my '96 cbr 600 F3 to a 2009 Firebolt. when purchased it had on 9511 miles on it, after market jardine slip on and k&n air filter. (I absolutely love it) rode great for the first couple of months then I started having a slight running issue. I would start the bike cold and it would crank then sound like the engine would seize then crank over real hard. theres also a misfire at idle where my revs would drop then pick back up a couple times and then drop until it cut off. the bike would still run and ride fine otherwise and everyone that heard it always said "its a harley engine its not gonna sound smooth" and since it still rode like normal I didn't give it too much thought until one day I lost engine power while riding. (cruising a backroad @ 70mph almost 80 miles away from home) got it to start again after letting my fan run through and shut off thinking it was just too hot. got about another mile farther down the road and same thing. except this time no more crank. and the dash was dim. get it towed home throw the battery on the tender get a full charge hoping its that simple but still no crank.

my next trip was to a shop. had them test my entire electrical system (stator, regulator, ignition coil) and the fuel pump and injectors. they said they could only keep it running by using starter fluid. they said after testing my fuel system that my air:fuel ratio was off and the fuel tuner was reacting to 1/4 turn of the throttle as though it was wide open. they recommended I take it to a certified buell dealer and have them check my ecm to see possibly retune it. that shop found no error codes and my ecm already has a custom map. they reset my tps and the bike ran fine... for 2 days.

cut to now. I still have a misfire at idle and it generally takes 2 tries to get it to start and stay running I do the throttle twist tps reset every time before I start it if its sat longer than an hour. I still have the misfire but it goes away after the bike gets up to operating temp. I've also noticed my pipes seem to get red hot after only a minute or 2 at idle. I'm running out of ideas for what it could be so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would check the intake seals on the throttle body using the shop service manual propane method.Replace the {IAC} Idle air control Oring. problem seems to happen from what you say first 2minutes. The ECM would be in open loop which .when it goes into close loop the O2 sensor is sensing a lean mixture signal to the ecm which is keeping the injector pulse open adding more fuel which the bike is able to over come seals leaking air.

P.S open loop when you first start the bike cold. Close Loop is when the O2 starts to send signals to the ECM .

Need to add to my list of troubles tonight on my ride home from work I hit the rev limiter in 2 or 3rd gear I can't remember which and right after I felt a noticeable drop in power. At 4k rpm I had no pull and my bike sounded like a lawn mower. Got it home turned it off now it won't start and stay running. It makes a "chugging" sound and pops a lot before cutting off. No check engine lights or anything with it.

Could this be a fouled spark plug? Or something (hopefully not) worse?

Doesn't sound like a scenario where a plug would have fouled.

Start with the basics, spark, fuel, and air.

A compression check is a little more involved on an XB, but would be an easy way to rule out catastrophic valve / ring / cylinder / piston damage.

If something catastrophic happened wouldn't there be a noise or some sort of indication that something bad happened? By all sounds and reactions from the bike it was just revved up and it wasn't until I released the clutch that I noticed anything wrong. Before the rev it was running fine.

I would reset adaptive fuel value.If bike runs good for a little while then gradually starts running bad again I would suspect ECM. Do clean all the bikes grounds that attatched to frame. Remove battery metal frame and clean where the 4 bolts go into frame.

Pull the plugs when bike is cold and see if they are fouled and need replacement

Ive got spare spark plugs laying around I didn't have the running issues until I switched the plugs on it. I put in eridium plugs but I've got ngk copper plugs to swap out with. Could something this simple be causing all my problems? As far as rough idle and running lean low?

I agree with reepicheap but it wouldn't hurt to go back to the plugs that worked. Make sure that the plug wires have dielectric grease and were or are installed properly.

YouTube compression test you would need to get the appropriate gauge.The gauge hose threaded adapter goes where the spark plug threads into the engine cylinder head.There are different types of cylinder compression test. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have an experience mechanic performed this for you.

Well alrighty. Luckily for me I can get an experienced motorcycle mechanic to do that for me.

Also would anyone here be able to tell me what set up my ecu is currently using? I've only been told that it's "custom" the code is: m31vs282 the s could also be a 5 the handwriting makes it questionable.

Sound like a scenario I've experienced. Check the butterfly in the throttle body. I've had 2 snap on the axle.
