Before the updated kit, people were fixing 5V regulators to their sense line to prevent spikes getting through. I'm not sure that's need now. Also, just because you have the old setup doesn't mean it's going to fail soon. My original setup had 88K miles on it so far. I's a crap shoot just like the oil pump drive gear. |

Well, the rewire kit was only $15 more than the sensor alone, so thats why I decided to buy it. Obviously, there had been enough of an issue with the speed sensor that a rewire kit was created. I figure for $15 more, I would likely have some added security that the problem might not come back up, assuming the rewire would do it. Even if it doesn't, I've only lost $15 on the bet. I'll report the results as soon as its installed and I get some miles on it. |

Well, well, well, I have now had issue with a blown fuse with the speed sensor disconnected. Rode the bike 3+ hours, shut her down just outside my shed when I got home. Took helmet, etc off, opened the door to the shed, and when I hit the starter, she blew the fuse just like all the other times. Not inclined to think it's the speed sensor. So, what are the other culprits, so I can begin to trace the problem again? |

Damn, so much for the easy fix. I thought it was something to do with heat soaking. I don't believe it to be a short as of yet. At least a direct one. So Bikerrides your ride was with the speed sensor disconnected so you had no speedo, correct? I'm going thru my copy of the elect. schematic and looking for something else. I have had no problems since the original problem. |

Next time I have it (the problem) I'm going to switch the 2 relays and 2 diodes, I have a whole bunch of fuses now to play with. See what happens then switch them back if I need to. |

Buellbert, Yes, my ride was w/out the sensor connected w/out a speedo. A couple weeks ago, I had trouble when the bike shut down on the street. I was running an errand and doing a lot of low speed, stop n go riding; very hot that day. It was a blown fuse and it immediately blew the new one, so I disconnected the speed sensor and it ran fine afterwards. I felt at that time that it had to be the speed sensor until it blew the fuse today after several hours of riding w/the sensor disconnected. I never installed the new sensor and rewire kit, but it shouldn't have blown a fuse with the sensor disconnected, if it was the sensor. I still think it may be something heat related. While out riding today, it never blew a fuse even though I shut the bike off at least 5 times. Never blew a fuse until after i did an 80+ mph freeway romp just before getting home; the rest of the day was 45-65 on backcountry roads. |

Sorry Rocket, like I said I will be trying the relays but only if it blows again and I will be just switching the 2 as they are the same. I forgot your post. I was just looking at the wiring diagram. It does pay to reread the posts from top to bottom. Still we all thank everyone for help. I do have spare relays and diodes also. |

What relay are you referring to. The starter relay? I have a 99 s3t with DDFI. I can't speak for your Buell with F.I. I have a 98 S1W with carb. That said, the two relays under the tail unit. I believe one of these was the culprit on my Buell. But it is ten years ago give or take. My memory is not that good. I will look at the manual over the weekend and see if I can pinpoint it.
