So refreshing the math for 2007... looking at the highest VIN number we see (1359) suggests that there were at least 1359 XB12's built (probably more, as we don't know the true highest VIN, and the non US bikes seem to have different VIN schemes). And for 2007, we now have 10 confirmed failures, but of course we don't know of every failure either. So at the current moment, based on the limited information we have, if you have a 2007 XB12 you have a .7% chance of having your crank already failed. Too high for sure. Grounds for all out panic? Not that either. Grounds for attention and any and all possible preventative measures? Youbetcha! (Message edited by reepicheep on October 07, 2013) |

Oh, and FWIW, I dropped my oil pump and looked at my Uly pinion gear (30k miles), and it looks perfect. Anyone with the crank failures... how did your oil pump pinion gear look? Motorfish has me wondering if that can be a early warning of impending crank failure. |

Add mine... I didn't realize this thread was here. It happened a while back. Stretched front Con-rod. Replaced with '08 crank. My Vin is in my profile but leave it there. I don't mind if you extract the build month (I think it was Nov of '03...). |

OK, thanks. I'm not sure how to even get to the VIN... can you PM it to me? And verify the build date? I'll update the chart with the VIN masked (though in fairness, where it slots into adjacent published VIN's, it may not be hard to guess). |

Hrrmph. I have a clacking coming low (I think) and from the right front of my motor. For people with dead cranks, how many miles did it take to go from "is that a funny sound or my imagination" to "she's dead Jim". |

Seems to be getting a little better now. I'm thinking bubble in lifter, or half failed lifter. Time will tell I suppose. |

2007 Model June '06 build date 50,690 miles Crank still good. I have a bad head gasket on the rear jug so the top end is coming off this winter. I guess I'll find out if there's any play in the crank. Probably throw in a new set of lifters as well. I've got one that sometimes bleeds down. |

Thanks for the update Kyle! Data entered. I'm particularly happy to see that update, as before I was one "not dead yet" between two failures. Lots of other non failures in the neighborhood now. Good call to pull the heads, by now they can use a good de-carboning anyway. And if you pack them up and send them to Pammy at Cycle Rama, they will inspect them and replace what needs replaced, and they will come back and put a nice little pop back in that engine. Not too expensive either. They can source you a nice gasket kit also to throw in the box with the return stuff. I used the Autozone lifters. You have to change one part out of them, but it's easy. Seem to be working great, otherwise look indistinguishable from the stock parts. Let me know if you need a part number (Melling maybe?) and I can try and dig it up from my notes. They had them in stock at my local store. |

Got the top end off now and the crank has no perceptible movement with 51,041 miles. The intake ports were full of carbon build-up. Definitely going to do a breather re-route. |
