My 2010 Long's cooling fan jammed up and blew a fuse today. When I stopped to check it out, I found this weird rubber thingamabob jammed in the fan. Can anyone tell me what it is? I'd like to know if it's a piece of my bike or just random debris from the road. Three pictures here:

Now the fan is making more noise than usual. It sounds like a dual-tone car horn, but is only slightly louder than it should be. I'm thinking I should replace it before my cross-country ride next month so I don't get stranded in the middle of nowhere. |

That is a damn good question, I don't recognize that thing and I know what just about every part looks like.
I wonder if it is just FOD. The fan ain't easy to get too, so it is rare for that to happen. |

Looks like it was something added to 09 models, I've never seen it before, it is not on the 08 or older models when I look in the online parts book

I'm not in the mood right now to take mine apart for futher investigation but more than likely could be scuffed up both surfaces after cleaqning with IPA and glued with good quality contact glue.P.S Thanks for the pic upload Froggy. |

Right, y'all don't have the back story. I actually do a lot of what needs doing myself, but I recently brought it in for a repair I couldn't even diagnose. The last person to touch the baseplate was the dealer. If it were simply a matter of reinstalling the bumper, I wouldn't even bring it in, but the way I see it, their workmanship is what caused the bumper to come loose and damage the fan.
Remarkably, this dealer generally shows good workmanship, and always shows excellent customer service. I've already spoken with them about this, and they don't seem inclined to argue with me.
$$$ aside, the beauty of the "stealership" is, if I try to fix something and break it, it's my problem. If they try to fix something and break it, it's their problem. So, my #1 question before attempting to do my own work is, what's the worst that can happen if I botch this?
I had two electrical repairs recently. One involved replacing a handlebar switch, which connected to the main harness. The other involved fixing a broken wire ON the main harness. I did the first myself, as there wasn't a lot that could go wrong, but I let the dealer risk f**ing the main harness, so that if it came to it, it would be replaced on their dime, not mine.
....anybody else think their XB seems very reliable mechanically, but not so much electrically? |

What exactly messed up on your harness that you repaired? Day one after trading my 06 ULY $11,500 for the 09 ULY $6000 first day I went through the harness and heat protected, Tie wrap and used dieletric grease on connectors.Delaying ECM MOD cause that to fail. knock on stealership with wood no other problems. I agree with what you said above. |

P.S continue from above both were bought new from a Stealership.I like the 09 DDFI 3 better than the 06 DDFI 2. But like fuel millage better on the 06. 09 crank is .25 bigger than the 06. Don't miss 06 TPS resets. Love the simplicity of the IAC.Love the buell more than the wife. |

I've never actually had a faulty connector. I diagnosed a faulty starter button, confirmed the diagnosis by "hotwiring" the bike at the relay box (not really hotwiring, as it still needed the key), and replaced the right hand switch pod just a couple of months ago.
The bike has less than 25K on it, and so far has suffered one cooling fan failure not related to this thread, a faulty sensor on the fuel pump, a starter button failure, and an arcing coil. There was also a broken turn signal ground wire for comic effect.
For all that, and for all that I poke fun at the antiquated air-cooled pushrod engine with only five clunky gears instead of the proper six, I can't think of a single mechanical problem. Everything that's gone wrong has been electrical. |

what was the sign and symptoms of your fuel sensor? Yes same here electrical problem my 06 had a improperly crimped wire to the fuel pump that would cause the bright light indicator to light up with a no start it was found doing the wiggle test.
I do believe that the ecm was probaly crack but didn't no about the mod back then. I had about 25000 on the 06 and 24000 on the 09.I have a Kawasaki Versys A good reliable bike,under slung exhaust,The seat sucks of course I like the ULY much better. |

I agree, the electrical system is not what it should be. The engine is pretty much bulletproof. |

Gabby Duck, sorry for the long delay! I must've missed a notification or accidentally turned my notifications off. So, months later, I can answer your question.
The low fuel sensor stopped working, and I found this out by running out of gas on the highway. The pump itself was fine, but unfortunately the low fuel sensor is a non-repairable thermistor on the pump. Had to replace the pump - small problem, big fix. |

Copy I just suffered my first fan failure on my 09 april 11 2015. Blowing fuse.fan seems OK.Unwrapping the wire harness because I can turn the fan on and off with wiggle wire harness test.Also can shut off the bike engine with same wiggle test.Looks like I'm going to drop the motor to access the wire harness going up along the left side of the fuel tank to further investigate and repair. Rear rocker gasket has small seeping of oil.Will R&R the rocker gasket while engine is rotated or off the bike. |
