So I can't find a definitive answer on what my 02 S3T with PM wheels came with from the factory. I'm not on my home computer, just on my phone. If I was on my computer I'm sure I'd find it.

came with the same 170's as the std. rims, but 180's fit fine if you are so inclined

Just wondering, the 170 that's on there now has rubbed through the rear hugger on the belt side. Not sure what's up with that. Its a Shinko rear on there now. I bought the bike with it like that. I'm slapping a set of pilot powers on the bike this weekend.

I have a new hugger for it and the new rear is a 180. I'm thinking I might just leave the new hugger off.

The PM would have had a 180 from the factory, it is half an inch wider then the Castalloy wheel. I wonder if the Shinko may be slightly wider? You can space the fender out some with washers if you still have a clearance issue that can't be resolved.

I had a Shinko on my S1 with PM wheels and it definitely had a wider profile look to it than the pilot road 2 (or 3, can't remember) that I replaced it with. But mine did not rub through the hugger.

Jolly, was your Shinko a 170 or a 180?

Does someone have an original S3T spec sheet that shows what tires originally came on the bike with PM wheels? Court????

Did they come with 170's on early years then switched to a 180 later or vise versa?

+1 on the factory 170. I bought my bike new with PM's and have run both the 170 and 180 sizes. I switched back to the 170 as it corners easier.

My bike had the original 170 on it when I bought it. I have been on 180's ever since.
I have an X1 CF hugged on it and it does not rub.
I suspect the shenko is the issue.

I've been running 180's on the rear since my second set of tires. That would be about 14 years ago : )

I think it was a 180 shinko, I replaced it with the same size in the pilot and noticed when I picked the bike up that the the Shinko was noticeably a little wider.

Whichever it was, 170 or 180, the shinko just appeared to be wider.

As is documented above, the PMs had 170/60 rear tires from the factory. The PM rim is one half inch wider than the cast so can accommodate a 180 (I have run both). The problem you likely have is the profile of the tire. Each brand is different, some are flatter than others. That is also assuming that the overall profile is a 60. You can't know if it is the correct tire size by only knowing it is a 180 or a 170. If you go with a 180, you should go with a 180/55, and a 170 should be a 170/60.

I'm going with a 180/55 Pilot. A 170/60 Shinko is what's on there now.

Make sure whoever installs the rear tire pays close attention to the left/right spacers when putting the wheel back on. I have 180/55 and there is plenty of space between the tire and the rear hugger. But mine is an X1 so that might make a difference.

So I put the new Pilot Powers on and being a 180 vs. a 170 it is a bit wider but the Shinko rear was definitely taller by a about a half an inch or so.

The 180 Pilot doesn't even come close to rubbing the rear hugger. Who knew???

The axle went right back in the same spot. The Shinko has a much taller profile than the Pilot Power.
