2000 M2 26k Dead battery opened the primary, removed the mag and found the screws heads that hold the gear to the mag where gone and I found them in the slots in the mag. Stator looked like broken top romen. Went to eBay and bought a mag from a 2002 883 sporty with the 8 bolts instead of 4 and a new 32A VR and a drag stator. Any recommends or thoughts ? Not sure if I over tightened the mag last time and shortened the clearance or if this is just a common problem? I read where some welded the mag to the gear to avoid this problem - sounded like a good idea. |

There was some sort of Stator virus going around at the S2 Gathering. Eric seems to have brought it with him down from Canada....I blame him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bOR38552MJA (Message edited by Lynrd on July 04, 2014) |

Very early research stage led me to a thread that says Redline or Mobile 1 tranny oil can eat the stator. (Due to sulfur). I just put Redline in last fall. OTOH, we run frequently run two electric jackets. |

Hey! Let's start a "What oil do you use " thread!! But I imagine the two electric vests plays a part. I am interested to hear what Jack reports about HIS stator....He has a Cycle Electric kit in there. Mark, DonCasto mentions upgrading the rotor on his page... http://www.doncasto.net/DonCastosS3ConventionalWis dom.html#Sprocket%20Rotor%20Assembly I don't think welding that magnet is necessary or a good idea - welding would mean you've unbalanced that part- so you'd want to get it rebalanced if you did that. But it sounds like you did a good upgrade. Amsoil 20W50 engine and primary... |

It might not be a bad idea to check for crank runout on these bikes with stator problems. Steve |

85,000 miles on mine so its not really a problematic bike. There seem to be upgraded aftermarket stators. Have a bit of research to do. And the project snowballs quickly. Might as well do the primary tensioner, crankseal, detente plate, clutch plate, oil pump gear, and so on. |
