FORD FL-1 is the size filter you want ... You can cross reference it to other BLACK or other colored filters ... |

I thought we weren't supposed to use car filters due to some internal spring loaded valve or something? |

The relief valve in a car filter is set too high. It is my understanding that this will come into play if the filter becomes clogged or partially clogged the relief valve in the filter opens and allows the oil to bypass the filter. Sportster engines run on about 15 psi oil pressure car filter relief valves run at 75 to 100 psi. I don't know what the proper crack pressure would be for a Sportster engine I do know it will never get to 75 psi. |

Specs on both are close enough for me.. If the filter is clogged that bad I don't thing the bypass is going to help anything.. More for extreme cold when the oil is too thick to flow through the filter, again I am not worried. |

And the bypass is not set for max psi only the difference between the inlet and outlet. Wix says 8-11psi on the bypass so when the pressure drops 8-11psi through the filter the bypass opens.. |

I am willing to wager that Lafayette has more (much more) than 50,000 miles using a Ford truck filter (FL1). I don't think he is worried either. |

"OK", lets clear up the OIL FILTER BUELLschitte ... Motorcycle weight oil will pass through car oil filters ... The "SPRING" that is always mentioned is supposed to allow oil to bypass the filter in the event it plugs up, "BUT" you supposed to change the filter before that happens ... If you oil filter ever plugs up you engine is/has gone south ... "i" run a FORD FL-1(chgn once a year) size oil filter in the OEM filter position a small FORD 4967(every 3K) size in my RETURN LINE FILTER set-up ... With out a return line oil filter the metal from your engine collects in the oil tank and or goes to the OEM oil filter by the feed side of the oil pump ... In plane speak: the metal retuning from the engine(oil pump return side) collects in the return line oil filter and not in the oil tank and does not go through the feed side of the oil pump which translates to me as a 50% reduction in oil pump drag for racers and a longer lasting oil pimp to me ... If you can not find the color oil filter you want you can paint them ... "i" run H-D SYN3 20w50 oil and change the small filter and oil every 3K miles ... "i" also take the small oil filter apart and see how much metal is in it ... Have 111,818.6 miles on the engine as of the last ride ... The more miles "i" get on the engine the less metal in the filter, "SO" at some point in mileage when the metal starts to increase my engine will internally start to die ... |
