Hey all, The speedo sensor went south on my 2k Cyclone so since I am fixing it, I am going to install a fresh set of plug wires as well. Are the Buell pro series wires any good or are they same as the stock wires? Any recommendation for the best wires for the Buell? Regards Mike |

I liked my Pro series not sure if there was any diff I didn't do a before an after dyno. (Maybe Aaron can help) But usally the bigger 8mm wires have less Ohms per foot. So that equals better spark. As a side not. The pro wires are a obsolete part so if your dealer has em get em. |

Make sure you get the new voltage regulated speedo sensor part, or you will be doing the whole job again soon enough... |

I wonder if I am having Speedo problems? My odometer went away and all I have is a trip meter, but it cannot be reset. Ken |

IMHO: New spark plug wires are a waste of money unless the old ones are REALLY shot. If the wires conduct electricity properly the spark plugs will spark as good as they are ever going to. New wires, fatter wires, shorter wires, or gold plaited wires won't give you a hotter spark. A higher quality wire will last longer than a lesser quality wire, but while they are both in good shape they will both deliver the same spark, or at least close enough that it doesn’t make a bit of difference. Of course, the manufacturers of expensive spark plug wires disagree. The Pro Series wires do come in pretty colors though. Yellow or blue would good on your black bike. Red would look better but Buell doesn’t make red, and orange just looks like dirty red. |

I am getting new plug wires for better isolation I guess. Not really for performance. I heard that cheapwires can short out the speedo sensor. BTW, I call Buell customer service today and Rene' was kind enough to have Buell cover the cost of fixing the speedo sensor. I just told her that these things are having lots of problems not to mention the two or three revisions of the sensor. I have the extended warranty so Buell is going to pick up the $50.00 deductable. IMHO, Buell should replace these sensors till they can figure out how to make one that is not going to malfuction. I hear of guys buying three or four of these things. Not right to have the customer fork over their cash for these things due to the fact it is a known issue these things do not hold up well. Anyway Buell's customer service is second to none. Good for Buell! Thanks Cyclone1 (Frank) for finding the new part number for the factory filtered speedo sensor... >>The speedo sensor "kit" provides instructions and required parts to re-wire the existing VSS circuit to a 5VDC FILTERED power supply<< Part# Y0199.K Fits 99 up tubers, and all 03 XB's. The 9s's all have regulated supplies already. |

"New spark plug wires are a waste of money unless the old ones are REALLY shot." AFAIK, the spark plug cables can be broken internally and still work - (the break effectively increases your spark plug gap, 2 gaps in series)- but it also causes lots of radiated energy and power line spiking, which can take out other electronic stuff. As well, sharp bends in spark leads causes "corona" effects that will break down the insulation in that area faster. Typically the lead breaks down in the spark plug cap (runs hotter?) - check with an meter for proper resistance and flex and pull on them while testing. |

I got the blue Pro Series wires for my 2k M2 years ago just because they look better - no other reason. But mysteriously, I have had no speedo problems - yet. Not sure if the wires helped, but they sure do look good. |

Yes, extended warranties are supposed to cover speedo sensor replacement. If it's anything like on a Blast or M2 the process may make you rethink and do it yourself. Step 1: Test ride bike and verify it is malfunctioning. Step 2: Schedule bike in for service, have customer deliver it and come back for it later sometime. Step 3: Remove sensor from engine and wipe off the end of it and reinstall. Test ride to see if it's still malfunctioning. If it appears okay call customer and have them come get their bike back. Step 4: If the cleaning didn't work, or if the customer says it went out again before they got home, then reschedule the bike in for service again to have the sensor assembly replaced and/or upgraded. Step 5: Replace speedo sensor assembly. Step 6: Call customer to come retrieve their bike. One person I knew had to take their Blast into the dealership 6 times before getting it resolved. I just replace my own, and while some anony has said that doing so negates any tracking of the sensor issues the $50 it cost me in parts was less than the expense and hassle of dealing with the dance routine above. A catch-22, but such is life at times. YMMV Call your dealership and see what they have to say. Then please report back and let us know how it all turns out. I'd like nothing more than to reduce the dance routine to one step. Step 1: show up at dealership and have the sensor replaced immediately while you wait, should take less than the time it takes the service writer to enter your bike into the system and fill out the paperwork. Be on your way in less than a hour.

It should be a $75 or so part, if you get the new ones. The old ones are $50, though some dealers gouged for them at $75. Those dealers, who know this is a defective part, oughta be shot (IMHO). Buell knows its a chronic problem, and fixed it with the latest part revision (the regulated one). The speedo sensor "kit" provides instructions and required parts to re-wire the existing VSS circuit to a 5VDC FILTERED power supply Part# Y0199.K Fits 99 up tubers, and all 03 XB's. Its easy to replace yourself. An allen wrench, something to snip the existing cable ties, and a couple new cable ties. Don't pin anything down super tight, which could stress and break the wires, give things room to move around. |

There are days that I'd love to replace myself, but that whole "snipping" thing makes me a little nervous |

All, Does anybody have a picture of a speedo sensor off a firebolt? I will see if it is under warranty when they call me and tell me the part is in.

The firebolt shares the same sensors as all the other (old style) parts. It is not 5v regulated, and so also shares all the same problems. The lightning did have a 5v regulated supply, but I think the part is still identical, the change was put in elsewhere. I think the problem is fixed on all 04's, and they are all regulated. |

Hey any of you guys know of another part number for the new speed sensor upgrade kit? Just booked my 03 9R in and they do not recognise the part number Y0199.K. I was told all part numbers are in the form XXXXX-XXX, sure enough, the airbox from the 12, the race ECM and the race filter are. Sure don't want to get fobbed off with a standard one when my warranty runs out early September. Might it be a european thing? (Scotland calling) How about a Buell customer services link or number if they have one. If so are they any good? Gaz |

Your dealer is mistaken, the correct part number is Y0199.K that is a zero, not an "O". If you are going to a Harley dealer, that may be why they don't recognize it. It can only be ordered by a Buell dealer. Randell |
