Went to jump on the bike this afternoon after work to discover I am leaking oil! The swingarm weld right in front of the rear tire. Oil is getting on my tire. I guess it gave way on my ride to work this morning. I take it I need to get it rewelded? Do I have any temporary solutions? | ||

I just put some Magnum tacky epoxy on it. We'll see how it holds up. | ||

If your repair does not hold try Magnum Quick Steel, itcan fix it permanently. You would need to drain the oil, hit it with some brakecleaner inside and out making sure all of the oil is out of the crack(dry it immediately as it can melt powder coat). I would partially stop drill the cracked weld with a 3/32 drill or so, at each end only going about half way into the material. Then grind into the crack a little with a dremel or other. Then remove the powder coat about a half inch all around the crack, fill it with the epoxy leaving it hump up a little higher than the surface working it in to make sure you have no trapped air bubbles. That stuff is strong, sticks excellent, is oil proof, and will probably replace the strength of the weld. (Message edited by etennuly on June 05, 2014) | ||

I recommend you get the swingarm/oil tank welded ASAP. The other recommendations can work. But leave a lot up the craftsmanship of the individual doing the repair. And, as has been stated above, it is imperative that oil is not in the crack when applying the epoxy materials. OIL on TIRE = NOT GOOD! | ||

Thanks guys. I went with the Magnum Quick Steel. Cleaned the crack with plenty of paint thinner, then sanded. It set for about an hour and a half and the oil is back in the bike. I will report back tomorrow. | ||

If the Quick Steel fails you probably will be disassembling the swing arm to have it welded. I never heard of a swing arm weld cracking on one of these bikes. It is a stressed part so watch it closely. | ||

The repair is holding up fine. I have noticed that the fan comes on a lot earlier than before, though. The bike did lose some oil, would that drive up the temperatures this much? | ||

Deeds, The bike only holds 2.5 quarts so anything less is going to affect the temp of your ULY. How much? You got me. Another thing you might want to do is power blast the oil cooler to clean it of any buildup dirt and bugs. |
