Decided to open up my original '06 ECM and check the joints for cracks. Opened it exactly like Garrcano did:
So those who have reflowed/soldered these pins, is that something the average garage solderer guy (me) can do effectively, or do I need to find an expert? |

You can probably do it fine if you have good solder. A solder sucker is cheap and would not be a bad idea either. Those are bigger connectors, so you can probably get away with a 35 watt soldering iron even. http://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-Solder-Sucker- desoldering/dp/B0002KRAAG Radio Shack used to have them as well, not sure if they do anymore. A better and less expensive way is to use copper braid and a 15 watt soldering pencil / iron. It soaks more of that crappie solder away from the joint. I would recommend a silver bearing solder be used to make the new connections 62% tin 36% lead and 2% silver diameter size of either .015 or .032 as it will flow better and require less heat vs time at each connection joint. Dean, If you have done any circuit or wire soldering. You should have no trouble re-flowing those PCB terminal connections. Or, If you want to come to my house I can help, as I have all that is needed to do the repair. You've already done the hard work... |

Thanks for the advice and tips guys. That's Garrcano's pic of his ECM, my original was giving me erratic issues until it got to the point I could shut off the engine by pushing down on the gray connector and I'm suspecting those contact points so I opened it up. I'm having heating issues again with my newly overhauled top end, bike runs great until the ECM gets told it's hot and I get good old Skip Spark, this happens inconsistently and in conditions where it shouldn't like last Sunday morning cool and overcast at 70 mph. One of Al's Rules states that problems can be a direct result of my last work and I agree after two engine rotations something could have broken in the harness. But since I've already replaced the O2 sensor, intake and injector seals, cleaned the grounds, figured I'd try a couple more things and maybe fix the 06 ECM while I'm at it. Very generous offer Teeps, I'll let you know. Made it out to the Rock Store Sunday (at 60-65 mph both ways...), mine was the ONLY Buell there. Man that place has become a circus. My daughter rides out there now on her new Kawi 636R and I'd really prefer she stay away from the Snake... squids everywhere. |

Use ECM-SPY or other to check the actual air and engine temperatures. I had it with my 10 bikes IAT sensor. I fitted an air temp sensor, with a digital meter outside the bike, next to the IAT which said about 27C but the IAT was reading close to 50C. Replaced the IAT and all was fine. |

Let me know when you want to make the trip. Most times my Buell is the only one there. My window of time, there, is 0930 to 1100 hrs. Been lots of Police around too... |
