Road_Thing, Who did your solo tail piece and seat? I've got an extra tail section that I'd like to convert like that! Any info would be appreciated. Mikej, "Fabricate" is too strong a word, it implies some talent which I don't possess. The pulley cover is just a piece of aluminum sheet (don't know the gauge, but it said "No Parking" on the reverse side, if that helps) that I mounted on the back side of the cast brace, then drilled and polished for appearance. It's about a two-beer job, not counting material procurement! r-t |

R-T, The tail section on your bike bespeaks of talent, so fabricate in that case is appropriate. I have seen some of that pulley cover raw material on my commutes to and from work, I will have to keep an eye open for bits of it hanging a bit loose to the posts it's usually attached to. Or maybe I'll just try some hammer-welding some steel soup cans together until I get the right thickness and go from there. Or not. Thanks for the info though. I've got a new cam cover on the way so I'm looking at modifying my existing one during a probably cam swap project and plan to incorporate some sort of additional metal work in the process. Who knows where it will end up, but it will probably include a modified tail section similar to your bike's but including some of the features of the older RSS passenger tail section. I figure if Corbin can't figure out how to mount a passenger backrest to an S2 then I might just as well do it myownself. |

Buellerthanyou: It's a product of Road Thing's Garage and Rest Home for Tired Old Motorcycles. Here's a link to an early post: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/20218.html#POST154629 I built a "buck" out of styrofoam, then coated it with plaster of paris and sanded it to the rough shape I wanted. Then I stuck several layers of glass mat over the buck. Once the resin had cured, I pulled the glass off the buck, cut it to fit an old tail section I bought on ebay, and bonded it on with more fiberglass. Faired it in with Bondo, modified an old S2 seat to fit, salt & pepper to taste, and yer done! Still haven't painted or upholstered yet. I'm a lazy toad. r-t |

I've joined the club. Snap red on white frame, from Firemanjim. Read about my adventures at the border with it on the Northwest Storm Fronts. A neighbour says it looks like a prototype. Now I have to decide whether to start improving the stock appearance or keep it "unmolested" for posterity and that hand-built look. |

Appreciate it and will keep that in mind once the kitcar is out of the garage and I finally have room to play again. Gonna set up the mini-lathe (speaking of which, I haven't found a reference to your setup's company name yet but still keeping a side eye open for one), refill the acetylene tank, dig out the air brush and pump, find a drill press someplace, and dust off the big railroad hammers. Could get downright dangerous in there. |

doughnut, Your S2 is not 100% stock. that front brake rotor is a leter model. The S2s came with a different design. |

Doughnut, that rotor is a later(not leter) year design. Was the stock design on S3s,M2s and S1s. If you look above to the stripped down S2 in Buellerthanyou's post you can see the type of rotor that came stock on your bike. Everything else looks correct but its hard to tell from your pic edited by buelliedan on March 12, 2004 |

That's not the stock shock either is it? Is a bike still "stock" if it has had recalls done? If so, I'd lump the later model Buell rotor in to the "stock" category. It wasn't a recall though, just a newer stock part, but it amounts to the same thing as far as differing from the off-the-assembly-line condition of the motorcycle in that it doesn't have any third party or home made parts on it. |

Court, how do these numbers work? Mine is a late 96 S2T. The Signature Series plate says 96S2T49 396/398. How do the 95 bikes have higher numbers? I read the 396 as "396 of 398 96 S2Ts". Does this mean that there is a 95 S2, a 95 S2T and a 96 S2 all with the same number (396) as mine? PS: did you get my message a week or so ago? |

Simon:; Eggselent question...to steal a quote from the poultry business. I will have to look at my VIN sheets but I *THINK* that VINs, at least the serial order portion of the number, is non-model specific. In other words....look at the following for 1998 and you can see that there are actually THREE "number 1" bikes that were built. My *GUESS* is that the numbers on the Signature Series plates combine all S2's and S2T's into a single group and take them by the order they came off the line and by year...hence I could have 1995 No. 509 and your 1996 could be 396. You have me curious now, I'll try to check more when time permits. 4MZRS11J9W3000001 - first S3 made 4MZFS11J1W3100001 - first S3T made 4MZRS56JXW3020001 - first California S3 made 4MZFS56J2W3120001 - first California S3T made There were a grand total of ZERO 1995 S2T's made as it was introduced in 1996. Hmmmmmmmmmm

I think I'll stick with Sportyeric. And yes, I'll proudly claim ownership of #36, although the VIN doesn't readily show the production number. Still waiting for the paperwork to clear before I can ride the darn thing. Weather is good and the Sporty is disassembled. I'm getting impatient. Searching up the previous thread on this subject, FMJ, if you find that neurologist's name, he who was the original owner, send it my way and I'll give him a call. Did you ask at SLC Harley if they had it kicking around. The timing cover, that is? And looking again at Bart's "have and need list", I see FMJ needs 258. My VIN ends 258 so is that just coincidence, Jim, or are you mistaken as to your 'keeper' bike's number? edited by Sportyeric on March 14, 2004 |
