Owned my CR since new, 31k miles. Over the last few months of daily riding, I've noticed vibrations coming through foot pegs at random, but also directly in line with on and off the throttle actions. Also, an audible clunk occurs (when rolling along at a slow enough to hear speed) when rolling on and off the throttle. I'd like to imagine I know my bike intimately enough to diagnose the issue, but I'm just not sure.. Belt tensioner? Timing chain tensioner? Wasn't there a post a few years ago about taking up the slack in the drive portion of the throttle? |

With the clunking, is it an audible clunk or more of clunk you feel transmitted through the handlebars or frame? It's fairly common for the front end to clunk due to how the front suspension was designed. Another possibility is the cush drive in the transmission output pulley. My front end has had the clunk since I got it at 6,000 miles. Now at 25,500. It hasn't affected the performance of the suspension, so it doesn't bother me. As for the possibility of the cush drive, I'm not too familiar with it. I know it's just a few rubber peanut shaped pieces meant to absorb the shock from the drive line. The vibrations you're feeling are most likely from the engine at specific rpms getting into and out of a resonant state. Mine does the same thing, but it has always done that for me. Either way, best of luck in trouble shooting!!! |

Engine mounts? |

Rogue, aren't all the engine mounts just bolts? I'm pretty sure everything is hard mounted, especially when compared to the XB's. There aren't really any rubber mounts, right? |

The forks clunk, of course. But I'm talking about a clunk from the clutch or cush drive... The clunk coincides with a rattle and vibration I can feel in the foot pegs. I'm going to track down some of the old posts on the cush drive and timing chain rattle... |

cush drive? |

Tough to diagnose this without actually riding the bike. But if I were you I would check those engine mount bolts to make sure they're torqued down. In fact I'd check every major fastener I can just to be sure. Then yeah, cush drive. If it's the timing chain wouldn't the clunk be felt and heard even with transmission in neutral? |

Do some research into the stator bolt i seam to remember there's a bolt that torques to like 300ft pounds that had been known to come loose and make that same noise |

Not really even close to the loose stator nut sound, but the nut is tight! Went for a ride this afternoon and the vibrations are getting a little more frequent. Something is loose or out of whack. Still hunting. |

I've got what I'd describe as a buzz that I notice the most through the left footpeg. I can feel it through the other peg a little bit, and I can also pick it up if I squeeze the frame spars with my thighs. It happens at all RPM's for me, but my suspicion is that it's a bolt between the frame and engine somewhere on the lower left side... Does that sound like what you've got too? I wonder if the vibration and the clunk are unrelated. |

Jim, that's exactly what I'm describing. Mostly through the left foot peg, that's why I questioned the belt pulley. Its in the same area. I don't think the clunking on/off throttle are related to the vibration, but the vibration worried me a little more. |

I don't think the clunking on/off throttle are related to the vibration, but the vibration worried me a little more. I haven't yet listened to see if it's RPM or speed related. That would tell us if it's engine or final drive. Another interesting test condition would be to listen for it while stopped or while coasting with the clutch pulled. It's a weird noise because It's like I can feel it more than I can audibly hear it. I'm off the road for a week because of a tire change, so it'll be a bit before I can test those conditions on the road. If there's anything you find or suspect that I should take off and look at while I've got her on the lift, let me know. |

I rode today and was able to deduce that the vibration is engine RPM related and not a wheel bearing, brakes, or final drive that would be speed related. Any new advances with your bike? Rotor nut? Is there a writeup for checking/fixing that on this forum? |

Check the Bearing on the Tensioner Wheel Similar thing was Happening to my mates 1125R we replaced the bearing and problem solved. The bearing looked ok but once under load there was a slight click to it which seemed to get worse at certain RPM's. |

Mbar has a good direction - gotta remove the belt to check it...wheel bearings went bad on mine when I heard clicking moving the bike around in the garage...recently engine was getting hotter and noisier...time to check the rotor nut?....but found this: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/636663.html ...mine's an early '08...hope yours isn't in the same condition....check your drain plug's magnet |

Check to make sure the side of the belt isn't scrubbing the guards. Other than that, agree that it probably lies somewhere in the idler pulley if your feeling it in the foot peg. When I pull in the clutch around 25 - 30 mph and coast, mine will make a subtle howling sound and a high frequency vibration from the idler pulley area (done this since new). Not very noticeable but I can hear it and feel it though. More or less engine load seems to change the resonance and it's not as noticeable. I chalked it up to the texture on the back side of the belt rolling over the idler pulley at just the right frequency to make the howl/vibration. I got nothing for the clunking but I think your in right vicinity. |

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? Does it have a crossbar between the pegs like the factory muffler? If not, the pegs will vibrate at certain RPMs. |

Rode to work again yesterday, 80 miles round trip.I'm just about at the same conclusion on the engine rpm relation. I can make it happen on demand now, by holding the throttle at a specific position. It goes away if I pull the clutch in and coast, so it surely only happens under load. I do have a barker, but have ridden with it for 30k miles and the vibrations are fairly recent (10k miles or so).... |

I have the FMF apex, but I didn't install it until a few weeks after noticing this vibration. Not using all 4 mounting points may cause a different vibration, but it's not the one that I'm experiencing. Great suggestion though. I'me still hoping that it's something on the outside of the crankcase. |

I took a wrench to all of the fasteners down by my pegs and wasn't able to find the culprit. The more I ride with it, the more I'm noticing that it's really a noise from the left frame spar and not the peg area. It seems like it's the peg, but it's just that my thigh is only in the right position to pick up the vibration when my foot's there. I'll check the fasteners on the left side that are a little higher up the next time I'm on the lift. Maybe there's something to be found under the left pod. I'm also going to try and run it at idle and listen to the case and heads with a mechanics stethoscope. (Message edited by jimustanguitar on June 16, 2014) |

Rear on stand. Get engine up to operating temp. Bike in neutral, pull in clutch for fifteen seconds, does it go away...still pulling in clutch, then release with hand on clutch...can you feel it? I've been feeling something. Not sure if it's the tensioner wearing out...less than 10,000 miles. |
