I wish they had an author that was more concerned with facts and less concerned with hip, but hey, it's gizmodo and the new media. They did the easy part right, which is to design a cool electric bike prototype. Now they have to do the hard part, which is turn that into a cool production electric bike. Then they have to do the currently impossible part, which is make that cool production bike perform well, have a good range, and sell for less than $10,000. Best of luck to them, and I will be happy when "impossible" gets cracked by a combination of good design and new battery and motor technology, but I expect this will just be another cool niche machine that sells for $18,000. I'll be an E-Bike adopter when the cost / benefit gets sane, which to me is a $5000 naked standard motorcycle with a $5000 premium for electric which I will consider as "pre-paying" for gas. $5000 will buy about 1250 gallons of gas ($4/gal). That's about 50,000 miles on a 40 MPG bike, which is probably about as long as the batteries will last. So that's the "break even" point. For range, I have a 40 mile round trip commute, so if a bike can get a 100 mile mixed riding range that is probably plenty. |

Don't forget to factor in the savings on oil changes. There is probably no oil other than in the shocks. Brake pads should last a long time due to the assistance of the regenerative braking. There could be a cost to installing a level 2 charger at home if a quick charge is required but that will likely be useful by various devices going forward. It will be interesting to see how these plug-in EV motorcycles do. |

True. That is another $500 easy over 50k miles in oil and filters. |
