Installed a Goodyear Falcon Belt late summer last year, and put perhaps 3000 or 4000 kilometres on it. This belt experienced some spirited riding, with a few wheelies here and there, but nothing too crazy. I think I was easier on this belt than the two OEMs I've gone through - they lasted approx. 20,000km each. It has been suggested that this is the exact same as the OEM belt, but this belt has black plastic-y feeling fibres. In my recollection, the OEMs that I've broken both had softer, lighter coloured cords in them (D and F revisions). I think it's time to adjust my riding style and/or install a Free Spirits tensioner.   | ||

The Falcons have carbon fiber cords and the Buell belts have Kevlar. I almost tried one of them very recently but was concerned about the reverse loading forces against the idler pulley. Your experience seems to have confirmed my suspicions, they may be fine for the HD's they fit but not XB's. | ||

Do you slow down with engine braking while down shifting? | ||

I do often use engine braking to slow down, but I am mindful not to do so harshly -- i.e.: in combination with the disc brakes, and never dumping the clutch. | ||

Carbon fibers are a poor choice for shock loading. The fibers are not elastic at all. Kevlar has some shock absorbing ability. Not much, but a lot more than carbon. | ||

There it is. I'll be running the Buell belts from now on. For $125 delivered, it was worth a shot, if only to rule it out. Fortunately, it broke just as I pulled up to work -- I carry a spare belt and everything I need to install it, so the most inconvenient part of it all was doing so between cloudbursts.
