I'm more than a bit frustrated right now. Putting the exhaust back together on my '97 M2 (took it apart completely to hit the elbow with VHT). The front stud/nuts went on fine, but when I tried to put the rear nuts back on, it seems like I stripped them and possibly a bit of the studs. They both locked, but I managed to get them off without snapping the studs. I'm at the end of a very long week and need some pretty basic input. I've read up on the stud issues the M2s have had- I don't think any damage was caused there, aside from a bit of stripping. The nuts looked like they'd misthreaded themselves when I got them both off. Am I going to need to replace the studs or grind them down, or can I just find myself some new 5/16-24s and go to town? Any and all answers are appreciated. |

Studs are cheap. Pull and replace them before they break. |

Agreed, get one of those stud puller thingies and put in new studs. I've seen them off the shelf at a good hardware store, and it may be one part the average HD dealer actually stocks anymore. |

I had to remove the head and get new studs put in $45 for PROs to do it right - if it comes down to that |

I went back to it in the light- I had picked up 1/4-20 nut bag by mistake. Friction melted some of the threads together on the stud. Ended up having to grind down the stud a little past the fused metal, got two nuts on the stud locked against each other, and got the studs out. Absolutely no need for a "stud puller" of any sort. A member of my family does Harley head work all the time- I called him up and got him to provide me with and set the new studs. Bike's back together now, and running well. Thanks for the advice. |
