Belt broke at 27,750 on my 08. It was installed new at 20K. This is the third time on this bike and including the 07 I've now put on six belts in about 60K miles. I have now achieved a 'break to ride away' time of 32 minutes. That is all. | ||

Very little urban riding, mostly rural roads. In each case the belt broke under 'enthusiastic acceleration'. | ||

I was playing drive belt roulette with my '06 Ulysses. When at just over 27K miles, last year, I discovered a perforation due to a chunk of gravel (thank you cal trans.) I replaced the belt at that time since I had a new belt in stock. | ||

Belt drives can be subject to wear and tear as well as chain drives. The service manual says what to look for on each pulley and when they should be replaced. Also, foreign debris can accelerate wear as Teeps found out. If you're losing belts at a faster pace you may need to consider this. | ||

I'm not sure how many miles on the belt after the F.O.D., I'm guessing less than 300 miles. I replaced it before it broke. I caught the F.O.D. during a tire change. | ||

I'd at least drill out the tensioner holes if I were you, and probably swap out the sprockets as well. | ||

"nominated for the golden belt award". Mine, so far, have only lasted about 7500 miles. Can not remember exactly how many but it is either 4 or 5. Nope it is 5. Two on the 10 bike and three on the 06. Just as a thought. I find there is a lot of dirt and brake dust on the rear wheel and if you run your hand over the belt it also has a lot of this on it. There is plenty of evidence to show that the rear sprocket is wearing over time. Maybe a wash with water would help but it is only a thought. | ||

Is the chrome plating on the rear pulley flaking off? that's like little razor blades. My X1 was killing belts due to that. | ||

Uly_man, Does your Ulysses have a F.S. Tensioner installed? If not, your bike would be a good test case for a F.S. Tensioner, proving whether it works or not. | ||

I broke one last week on the way to work. Piece of junk belt drive, broke when I banged it to 2nd coming up the street to the parking lot. I even had to paddle the bike 20 ft to a parking space after coasting in 100 yds. I was so embarrassed, people pointing at the dragging remains. Had to hide my shame by changing it out after dark with one of the spares I always carry, good thing it only took less than an hour lest I be discovered. AKE belt was only 55K and 5 years old, what crap... | ||

If not, your bike would be a good test case for a F.S. Tensioner, proving whether it works or not. 12 years we have been selling these tensioners, and I still read about belts breaking that shouldn't. Trust me they work, and there are hundreds and hundreds of them out there working away now  particularly when you put massive shock loads like this through the belt.... broke when I banged it to 2nd coming up the street to the parking lot. | ||
