Hey guys/girls. I have an 01 blast. Recently rebuilt top end due to hole in piston(Harley diagnosis). Harley was going to bend me over in labor rates to repair so I decided to tackle the project myself. However, Harley had already removed the fuel tank and a few other odds n ends. The project went well and she is running stronger than ever. Problem is that I can't get the tank to slide back down under the weld stud. Is there any trick to this? I have plenty of clearance on the shift peg side but super tight on the carb side. It's almost like I'm getting hung up on the breather. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Josh,

Please post a picture of the tank in the "stuck" position.

Are rubbers pulled off?

Concur!
Also check the tank rubbing bracket that bolts on the outside of top middle tie bar. If cockeyed it can cause difficulty (and a hole in the tank).

PS it should be noted that they don't always just slide right into place. Sometimes a nudge is needed.

(And that rubbing bracket is on the carb side!)

Working on the image upload using my phone because I'm at work. As far as nudging goes...I've used quite a bit of persuasion thus far.

Then something is definitely amiss if it wont go on with "persuasion"

Checked and realigned the rubbing bracket mentioned. It was perhaps part of the problem but I still can't get it to seat. It seems like there just isn't enough room ...I'm sitting flush on the rocker cover and can not push the tank down or forward any more.

Shouldn't touch rocker cover, is your isolator shot up front?

I'm assuming the gap in the second is not supposed to be there. Let me know if links don't work...technology is fighting me today.

...uh ohh I see what I did. I don't have the rubber for the isolator set properly through the metal bracket

I'm not sure if you found the problem or not?

But I need bigger pictures of the entire backbone from just behind handle bars, to the 2 holes in the frame for the rear tank hold down.

That isolator needs replacing anyway - I see cracks all over it - sign it needs replacing.

Fixed! Good call on the isolator...I had it on top of the spacers instead of below. Found a pic of how it was supposed look. Silly error. Thumping nicely now. Thanks for the advice guys.

Replace it - the vibration caused by a bad isolator will slowly tear the bike apart - no joke.
