This might be the first 2000 model I've ever owned that qualifies for "old school" by the forum definition. Hell, I like the bike even better now! I just got by Race Kit stuff put on in my garage yesterday too... http://www.californiamasseys.com/buell.html Mike M |

Personally I think old school Buells are the RSS & RS models, might even include the S2's & S1's. Whats your thinking on this one Blake? |

I agree with Dyna on this one. Tuber, carb, weak motor = Old school... Nothing like a Nallin kit to wake them up though! |

I would say anything built after the S2s are new school as S1s, M2s, etc stopped being "hand built" |

When I hear "old school", I don't think X1 w/ DDFI either. I took the bike out today and I had a guy tell me, "Yeah, those older Buells like yours are the best." I said "Older? It's a 2000 model." He said, "Yeah, I know - I meant the ones before the new XB models." Mike M |

I was out today and realized my 99 X1 is 5 years old, yet I still love it. As usual when I stopped, some guy came up to see it and talk. No street bike I've ever owned has satisfied me more than my "ol'tuber". What other bike can you go for a spin with a buddy that rides a fat boy, or somebody with a R6. Whatever haunt you pull into, it's accepted and people want to talk about either your hot rod Sportster or your Harley sportbike. Maligned as it may be, it is one of the worlds best conversation starters and a great motorcycle. As far as old school. I dunno. Only if you compare them to XB's. |

Dyna, Some have been begging for a tuber forum. In trying to think of a fitting title I came up with "Old School Buell". There aren't enough users with RS/RSS models to justify the topic. Those fit the Historic Buell topic in the KV. The X1 is kind of a bastard child, but it IS a tube framer and it's been around since 1999. Certainly all the other tube frame models fit what I consider to be old school. |

With the introduction of the XB's, the tube framers do look rather dated technicly. The XB frame and motor has definately put Buell into another sphere of evolution that has little in common with tube frames a la S1 M2 X1 etc. I do feel dated on the X1 sure, and it still attracts admiring looks and quisative conversations. But has that horn factor that cannot be denied. And to agree with Blake, some do belong in vintage. So for my 2 cents worth, Old school is any Buell with a tube frame. *Falls off soap box* MadGaz |

G'day Gaz, hope you weren't injured falling off the box, I agree about the tube framers too, but where do we stand on the carb/injection question? I know injection has been around since the 30s but electronic control? is it too new to be old? Hmmmm |

funny, my Y2K MaDeuece DOES look dated (compared to the XBs, at any rate), from a technical standpoint, but when looking at Jesse James cafe'd VTS, Honda's NAS biek, and others, it's still pretty fresh lookin . . . . havn't owned another scoot that pulls so many different duties so well since my 68 Bonnie: track days touring rig sunday morning apex straffer b'trax commuter smile generation machine |

Seems like a tube frame and a carb should be the requirements. The X1's are a gray area but the more the merrier I suppose. |

My 97 S1 has the old style pegasus logo`s. My 98 S1W has the new style pegasus logo`s. Hmmm ? The 97 has "old school Buell" lettering on the swingarm support bracket. The 98 has current or new style lettering on swingarm support bracket. I noticed other small changes through the years before H.D. stepped in. I think S1`s are old school. Anything with a sensor or ecm, I`m not sure. But X1`s were the last of the lightning tubers. S1 Eric |

Dann, I don't know what you posted but sometimes posting get moved to more appropriate KnowledgeVault sections. A gas tank could be under bodywork or under carburation and fuel delivery. Or it could have been snipped as you put it, but that's usually done with some words left behind or sent via email. Had my knuckles whacked by the ruler my own self I have. . There has also recently been some funny internet connection stuff going on that's apparently been affecting some postings and picture uploadings. I don't know what this all means but I have some thoughts on the matter as evidenced by the system where I work. YMMV. |

Philly, I could have been trying to shoot that other yellow one in the left foreground, too! I love old bikes. I love the old tube-framers. I don't love fuel injection. Not because I don't believe it's good, but because I'm familiar with carburetors and I sort of understand how they work. The XB's are technological marvels, but they haven't tripped my "want" trigger yet. If you look at the bikes listed in my profile, you'll see several common themes--older models, no more than two cylinders, no more (or less!) than one carburetor per motor! r-t |

hay even if my X-1WL is or isn't old school, IT STILL KICKS ASS IN MY BOOK! Even with the DDFI, the sooner it is considered old school maybe the worth value will jump.. hahaha.. dyna maybe you can get some cash from that X-1 then.. haha |

I consider my 00 M2 to be old school and that's just the way I like to see it. Although it was sad to see the tubers go in way I'm kind of glad because they are not on every corner like all of the other company's models. The main draw back is the whole "Part discontinued" aspect but I think with the help from dedicated Hooligans here us Old schoolers should be able to buy parts for many years |

I'm pretty sure my '91 RS would qualify for inclusion in the "OLD SCHOOL" category, although it is sporting later model (S2T) bodywork. Parts discontinuation has not been a problem, as I'm not convinced there were any parts actually made for these models to begin with, which is a necessary factor for anything to be DIS-continued! The 'weak motor' Bartimus mentioned is on the money - the stock '91 XL powertrain is underpowered, but the Aerocharger on mine has helped in that dept. Oops, maybe that makes it "NEW SCHOOL". If I can ever get my old school thought processes around this computer, I'll post a pic. Wherever I take this bike it attracts all kinds of people, from every interest group. High performance guys want to know about the turbo, custom H-D people look at the paint and style, Buellers try to figure out "what the hell?" I even enjoy it while it sits currently inoperative in my garage. Remember, fellow Buellers, terms like "Old School" are relative to the viewpoint of the observer, and to some of us it actually means something along the lines of "kick start, hand shift and manual spark advance." Everything has it's context, I suppose. AL |
