OK, so race season is here - and I have simple request; Please DO NOT put race spoiling information in topic headers or in the first line of your post.

Those of us who record races and watch later - and who also scan the new posts of Badweb via the Search function will see this information and it'll spoil the surprise of watching the races later. I'm sure you get the picture.

If you do choose to include race result information in your post, please preface it with a "WARNING: Race Spoiler" in the first line of the post.

Thanks

Henrik

I second that Henrik... I just completely stay the heck AWAY from anything having to do with F1 from Saturday night until Sunday at six when I get to watch the race... I've had races spoiled by careless people before and it sucks seems how I pay for satellite TV for the SOLE purpose of watching F1.

THIS is an apology? That boy has a lot of growing up to do. Yoshimura needs to fire him and AMAPR needs to suspend him for a significant period, like the rest of the season.

Disappointment comes from unrealized expectations. I wasn't disappointed.

I've seen this in racing all too often. Huge talent and huge egos often seem to go together, and give some people this world-revolves-around-me attitude, where they won't take responsibility for their mistakes and everything is everyone else's fault. Rare is the ultra-talented racer who is also humble and a good representative of his team and sponsors. It's clear from his supposed apology that Yates is still in prima-donna mode. He oughta lose his ride, that'd give him some time to come down to earth and adjust his attitude.

"I've seen this in racing all too often."
But it wasn't always this way. Today, too many are willing to excuse away bad manners and unsportsman-like conduct. This is prevalent everywhere. Not just some racetrack. Think back to the names that dominated motorcycle racing in the Sixties and Seventies. Some real gentlemen, and the few who weren't were not fauned over and excused away. On the Harley team, alone, were some of the finest. Trying to mention them all from memory, would slight someone forgotten. I miss the era.

I quess i followed too much american cirle track car racing when I was younger. Very few of those guys would have been called gentleman. I'm thinking of the like of A.J Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Smokey Yurnick.

They definatly had a sense of what was acceptable on the track however and if you crossed the line and drove dangerously you needn't worry about suspensions. The tire iron that came sailing into your pit after a race was the type of message those guys understood.

None of them had to worry about pleasing a big money corporate sponser, they mostly worried about staying alive, winning some money and maybe getting a few girls. If you didn't smoke, drink and curse than you were considered a gentleman.

If you let other guys stuff you into walls or take away your line than you didn't last long.

Dave,
The brawlers of the old NASCAR crowd wouldn't behave like Yates did. Disgraceful. It blows my mind that you are somewhat excusing such behavior. You are such a mild mannered gentleman. Or did you fool me. ; )

Blake, the drop kick was way over the top although the other guys says he never got kicked??

Maybe Yates didn't actually make contact but it sure looked like it from the video, of couse tha camera angle was all wrong to really see if he made contact.

If he kicked him in the back or tried to than he deserves punishment. Independent of all Yates' other hot headed actions in prior races I don't see the head butt as a big deal. Sort of like a hockey fight, ya can't hurt a guy too badly when he is wearing a helmet if you him in the helmet.

I know you all want the two of them to sit down over tea and express their feelings about the incident but I'm not buying that.

This is two guys doing something that requires ones agression level to be about as high as it can get. Violence is lurking every minute, people die or are seriously hurt on a rountine basis. I little pushing and shoving even some fisticuffs are gonna happen.

I do think Yates is a little out of control, his laying down on the track thing is nuts but many of these guys are a little out of control. You know what they say about racers, if you don't crash once in a while than you are not pushing hard enough.

Blake, the million buck comment, that is what I think a Daytona 200 win is worth to a guys career, maybe more.

Dave,
The fact that Fania didn't even recall being kicked shows that his helth at the time was very uncertain. There is no doubt that he was kicked. The video I was shows it plain as day.

Off the direct topic... a "drop kick" is what I do to a football. Was not what Yates executed a flying double side kick. No?

Your thinking that a Daytona win is worth a million dollars is way optimistic. Suzuki and all Yates' sponsors already have rights to his endorsements. They don't have to pay a penny more for his spokespersonage even after winning the Daytona 200. He is also barred from endorsing ANY products of his sponsors' competition. The purse from the race is a joke. He does get paid by Yoshimura. That and sponsorship contracts is where the money is.

Here's the real kicker. Yeah a win at Daytona could have improved Yate's position wrt contract negotiations next year or whenever his contracts expire. But his outrageous behavior will have the exact OPPOSITE effect. So if money was the motivational factor for his behavior, that would be extremely STUPID, wouldn't it.

He needs to be fired.

I gotta disagree. I see many of the leading professional racers in the top classes as being great representatives of their teams and sponsors. Guys like Mladin, EBoz, BBoz, all the Haydens, Rossi. I think it has more to do with the type of person one is from the very start. Some people just cannot ever admit they made a mistake or were wrong. Those are the ones who lash out at others when things don't go as they hoped for themselves or their immediate interests.

the level of behavior we have come to expect as "normal" from sports figures and other personalities has declined in almost direct proportion to their income . . .not a new thought, but a valid one . . .. . I'm having fun imagining what would have happened to Yates if he'd pulled his stunt at Peoria or Springfield . . . .

When Bubba Shobert had a fistfight in the pits, back in the mid eighties, the AMA suspended him and he lost the championship by 2 points. Yates assaulted a competitor who wasn't even upright after a crash, and had potentially serious injuries. That's much worse than a fist fight, IMO. I hope the AMA levies a severe and appropriate punishment to discourage such unsportsmanlike behavior.

Kangaroo kick has been the best description I have seen yet. And your right Blake, the fact Fania doesn't remember getting kicked even though he ended up hitting the haybales from getting kicked tells you how dazed he was.
