Hey all! I know this thread is a bit overdue IMO, but I wanted to name the bike and get it street ready and legal before I spent time posting it. I bought this jewel in Colorado Springs for a song, albeit with "some assembly required". I drove up to the Springs from Amarillo two weeks ago pulling a little U-haul motorcycle trailer behind our Honda Civic and picked her up. We stayed the weekend in the Springs at my In-Laws' house, so I took the opportunity to mount up the bodywork, air cleaner, and turn signals to save space in the car for my wife's obvious shopping spree :P. The stock air cleaner is missing the filter, and there were some welnuts and other nuts and bolts missing, as well as the windshield. I received the stock muffler, dash, modified stock seat ( extra foam in the rear), extra tail section (rashed), and extra fairing (slightly broken), inner hard bags and bracket but no lids, fairing bags, as well as a couple boxes of other odds and ends. The bike came with a lot of nice goodies installed, like Thunderstorm top end, SE ignition, spin-on oil cooler, and Wes-Tek billet clip-ons. One of the more interesting changes is the conversion to 7/8 handlebar controls on stepped bars (1" at the clamps, 7/8" after the bend). the controls have really grown on me, but the bars are shoddy, and I plan to remake them.   Once I got it home, I wasted no time prepping it for the road. While still in CO for the weekend, I ordered an NRHS round billet A/C and a Ballistic 12 cell lithium battery. When I got the bike home, I removed the turn signals and rear hugger, deciding to opt out on them, pulled and cleaned the carb and gas tank, cleaned and filled/bled the rear brake, changed the oil to Amsoil 20-50, and installed the headlight. I picked up the nuts, bolts, and wellnets I needed from Sutherlands and Lowes. I installed the stock muffler, but removed it because it rubs the oversize rear tire, which I don't plan on replacing until I get my miles out of it. I'm going to get a different muffler anyway, likely building my own design. There's a Corbin in one of the pictures- I bought it before I picked up the bike, but I'm trading it off and keeping the other seat instead.     And then I washed it once I got it inspected and registered  .  Bike runs awesome, and I've put a couple hundred miles on it since I got it legal last Friday. I have some XB stuff sitting at home that I'm either waiting on debating installing, like an oil pump, lines, cooler, and scoop, polished rocker covers, and XB12 primary gearing. As hot as it can get here, I do believe I'll install the oil pump/cooler setup at my next oil change, even with the spin-on cooler still on there, but I'm not sure I'll install the XB12 gearing. I don't ride as balls to the wall as I used to, so I don't really see myself needing it. I will switch to the XB rocker covers, but I'm waiting on a deal on some PCV valves and gaskets. I do still have some needs/wants on my list for the short term though. -windshield -bag lids, narrow and/or wide -T fairing lowers -set of 1" and 7/8" handlebars, of nearly any condition, to make new bars -snap red fairing (actually working out a trade now for one) -snap red fender or carbon fender from another bike that has a similar shape. - new riding gear (just bought a new helmet, looking for a Vanson jacket and some nice riding gloves) Anyway, enjoy the pictures, and let me know of any leads on my short list stuff. looks like a great project with a solid foundation to start from! Sure is great to see another one of these saved! I just completed mine, well, I'm down to the paint to finish mine out... and now that spring is finally here I can take this thing on a long ride to do a nice shake down test. good luck with your build... I was out in the shop and just realized- I have a spare (maybe aftermarket, not sure...) S-2 windscreen (and fairing). Fairing matches your front fender....I'll send you a PM...I think I have a swap for you...) I think it is best to stay with the Red Snap - that is the fastest color.  | ||

Anyone know where I can get touch-up paint for the frame? Or a color that is really close at least? I plan to weld in a frame brace instead of the billet brace I originally bought recently (And the sold to KC), so I'd like to paint it to match. Plus I have some paint peeled on the front wheel. I'm also seriously thinking of welding a nut directly onto the frame to mount the steering damper I just got in, since it doesn't have a frame mount (it's a universal). | ||

1000% agree with K12pilot. The S2 front brace is plenty strong from simple geometry. S1s with the way bent front reaction link anchor are a different matter. | ||

While I agree the S2 doesn't need a frame brace, I want to brace it moreso for a place to add a short downtube to hold my XB oil cooler. The steering damper I want because I had one aid in saving my life on I40 when I got a flat tire some 3 years ago or so when I had Priscilla. This bike is a LOT stronger than my last, so I definitely will appreciate the additional oil cooler in the summer. I'm 50 lbs heavier now (crazy, just found out yesterday) than I was with my last S2 and this one will still pull the front end up in the first 3 gears; Priscilla could never do that lol. The S2 V bracket can flex a lot (fore and aft). It was surprising to see how much they could move - just on the dyno. Find a bolt - on brace, please don't weld on what is becoming a rare frame. | ||

Some updates, I traded for a Force Racewinder, which I liked, but decided it didn't really fit my bike the way I wanted, so I put the NRHS A/C back on.  I decided to go custom on my muffler, and ordered a stainless 2-1 collector, which I'll utilize as a splitter, and ordered 2 stainless reverse cone megaphones. I'll have the only tuber 2-1-2 exhaust that I know of, as well as one of the loudest . The megaphones haven't come in yet, but the collector has. I shortened the tip and cut notches in it so that I can clamp it onto the collector of the stock header. The megaphones will likely be shortened a little as well so I can slip them onto the collector. Ross- I think the extra weight of two cans will soon break the the header tab at the old style hanger. I would upgrade to the new front hanger. Even then I think you will have problems with all that mass vibrating. (Message edited by essmjay on April 12, 2014) | ||

These cans are short and light. The whole setup is lighter than the stock muffler  . I do plan on upgrading to the new hanger though. Just waiting for a deal on one. Or I may even build my own. (Message edited by phelan on April 12, 2014) | ||

The shape - a fork- makes them into the equivalent of a tuning fork. They will have a natural tendency to vibration, probably at a specific frequency to boot. Specific frequency vibration = work hardening = failure. If you somehow tie the output ends together, you may be able to dampen the effect. +1 on swapping to the late hanger, though | ||

One thing I just thought of that I'd like to mention is that this bike is a LOT cleaner than my last S2. My plan is to try to keep it that way, keeping up with maintenance and polishing, as well as keeping clean any parts I add, which was certainly not the case on my last bike. | ||

I got the megaphones in yesterday and went straight to work. I cut up the splitter pictured above so I could mount the megaphones side by side. All I lack is building the mount and baffles. This thing is CRAZY loud without baffles lol.  Cleaned up a little bit.  | ||

Since you obviously have a welder I would consider making your own splitter, I think it would look a little cleaner, but its up to you. Also, in the picture I can't quite see the weld but it seems like you are using a non flux core wire without gas. I may be wrong but that might help you out. If you are using the correct wire/gas setup then I would try to crank the amps up a bit until you don't feel the gun pushing back on you as you weld. Based on your ground cord I assume you have a 110 amp mig welder, I would start with the amps on the 3/4 of max setting and wire feed at about the 6/10 setting for 023 wire or 5/10 setting for 035 wire. Anyways I like the idea you are going for and I like the dual muffler. Good job. |
