I am bringing this up as it has not ben brought up. Does anyone know what kind of intervals it is going to need? Rotating the motor is a sure thing . All diagnostics are on the bike from what I understand. Rear tire may be a daily occurance. oil change intervals??? |

Nothing has been announced yet. It is quite possible for things like the valve check that it does not need a rotate, but we don't know the details. Tire changes look like they may be easier, less stuff to unbolt. |

Ok Let's compare BMW S1k anyone know service costs??? Panigale I know no-one knows the service costs. Ktm RC8 probably the 1190 biggest competition.. anyone??? |

Owners manual will have nearly all that information and there will be an innovative and effective service network. I expect to be impressed and expect some things that have never been done before. Just a guess . . . |

I hope they're as straightforward to be owner maintained as Buells, with easy availability of documentation, etc. |

Well the service manuals to dealers are supposed to be online, and up to date all the time... Hopefully this extends to owners at little to no cost. |

I am thinking the valve adjustment will be close to the 1125. Should be the close to the RC8. The pignail is somewhere between 2-3k for the 15k service . haven't checked on the BMW. Not much info on the MV F4. The Aprilia RSV4 is about 1200 for a major service. |

Just speculation at this point, but sounds promising:
quote:Oh yeah, I heard an RX run this morning, and it sounded good. And they had a frame laying on a table, and it LOOKS like you should be able to get to the valve covers.

Someone told me the valve covers could be removed without rotating the motor. And the motor still uses the finger follower design. That would sure cut maintenance costs. The bare frame laying on a table at the outdoor exhibit seems to have nothing in the way of the heads. |

The pignail is somewhere between 2-3k for the 15k service . Are they crazy you would have to be nuts to buy any thing that cost that much to do a normal service of any kind. I do whole annuals on airplanes and before I charge that kind of money I had better have fixed something that is really broken. |

The frame and engine layout is the same as the 1190RS. One will most likely not be able to get to the valve covers without frame removal. I pretty sure that one cannot rotate the engine like the 1125R, due to the design of the airbox.
One would have to remove the throttle bodies and lower airbox first. I'll check it tomorrow as I'm starting to rebuild my 1190RS after a recent race crash. I have not seen an 1190RX in person, but the picts look virtually identical to the 1190RS as far as frame and engine. The airbox is somewhat different, but very similar. The 1190RS is a very easy bike to service. I don't see why the 1190RX would be significantly more difficult. The 1199 and 899 are both going to require disassembly of the bike so they will both be very expensive to maintain. That is on top of the fuel line replacement every 2 years, tires , suspension, brakes, etc.. |

Someone told me the valve covers could be removed without rotating the motor. And the motor still uses the finger follower design. That would sure cut maintenance costs. Saw this posted on another forum by an EBR dealer that was at AIMExpo:
quote:I do know the engine does not have to be rotated for valve adjusts like the 1125, they made it so the rear valve cover can come off easier. Pretty sure maintenance intervals are the same as the 1125 was.

they made it so the rear valve cover can come off easier. That will be cool if it's true, but I have my doubts. The rear, yes. But front is a different deal. I would go all in that the frame on the RX is the same as the RS. Even if one could get the air intake snorkel that sits on top of the front head in between the frame out, one can't get the coil out or the cover out. Not that I'm complaining. As I stated, it's easy to get the frame off due to everything else staying put; throttle bodies, radiators, etc. Pull off the top airbox, disconnect fuel line, free up the wiring harness, disconnect shock, remove 6 frame bolts and it pulls right up, subframe forks and all. That said, I wouldn't put it past EBR to have worked some magic and made a fool of me. That would be OK too. (Message edited by rodrob on October 24, 2013) |

The DSB-Spec 1125r bikes made frame removal trivial compared to oem. Pull the wheels, put the motor on a stand, lower the bike, and 4 or 6 bolts later the frame lifts off. You leave the cooling system in place. If any of how the race bikes from the 1125r generation work made it into the RX, this thing will be pure joy to service. |

At the Expo, I got to meet Micheal Kirkpatrick, who gave me a tour of the EBR hauler. He said if he was to do engine work on the RX, "six bolts and a couple of connectors, and the frame comes right off". So who knows, maybe both ways work. The guy that told me that he had take the valve covers off in frame was Steve someone, I can't remember his last name, but he was wearing EBR ID. |

Maybe an EBRRAN: Erik Buell Racing Rider Assistance Network Set up a grid of the USA with 200 mile spacing. Factory train a mechanic at each cross point. Then you would never be more than 142 miles from a repairman. |

"I am thinking the valve adjustment will be close to the 1125." We need to think again, or rather twice as much. Every 6200 miles is a valve adjustment. I guess I had gotten spoiled with the 12K-18K adjustment intervals of modern bikes. We're back in 90's Duc territory with those intervals. Price we pay to be the sportbike torque champs. |

"The valve lash adjustment interval is correctly stated at 6200 mile intervals for the 1190RX, which is the same as we recommend for the 1190RS. Thank you, EBR Customer Service" No speculation, straight from the proverbial(winged)horse's mouth. |

"Man that sucks" Don't loose heart, don't misconstrue the stipulation to inspect them as that they will always need adjusting. More importantly they've designed the bike so that is way quicker and easier to do. It just wasn't what I was expecting. |

The interval on the 1125r was a bit long, to be honest, and the 1190 revs even higher, so I'm not surprised to see it brought in. |

Had first service done today. Chain was a bit loose. Less filings on the magnetic drain plug than expected. Oil looked very good actually. Bike definitely has the smoothest throttle response I have ever experienced, especially for a liter bike much less a twin. All told $180 for new filter, a few quarts of AMSOIL and labor crawling over every bolt with a torque wrench. Only thing loose was the 13mm chain adjuster nut. One must pull the belly pan to clean and lube the chain well. Upping the revs! Review soon... |

The problem is, at least in my case, it means that basically every service would need to be done by a shop instead of me. I'm not that competent, so I currently basically only do my own oil changes, tires, and bolt on mods. At least with the 1125, the 6200 intervals were just oil changes (not even a filter), then I would drop it off at the dealer for them to do valves and oil and whatever else at the 12.4k. There are too many little things for me to get wrong doing the valve inspection on the 1125 so I don't mind paying a tech. I'll be watching to see what the real world maintenance is on the 1190s, perhaps it is something that I can do, I'll just wait and watch posts on here. I hope you enjoy yours, it is making me anxious for the AX |

My guess is, assuming the EBR 1190 engine is carried over to the AX, the engine will be re-tuned considerably to give a power band more suited to an ADV bike. It may be that the RX is running fairly radical cam profiles and that's why the 6200 mile valve check is required. A slight reduction in valve lift and/or duration (one way of taming the power band for ADV usage) might allow EBR to revert to the 12.4k interval. So, cross your fingers Froggy. |

> All told $180 for new filter, a few quarts of AMSOIL and labor crawling over every bolt > with a torque wrench. Only thing loose was the 13mm chain adjuster nut. To me that's steep, but not having to do the work yourself is definitely worth something. If the chain on the RX is like the chain drive kit, and I have a lot of good evidence suggesting that it is, you don't want the chain too tight, but also not too loose. It is REALLY, REALLY worth your time to take the rear tire off the wheel and pull the lower shock bolt (support the bike by the rearsets) on the swing arm, then swing the rear through the normal range of movement of the swing arm and take note of chain tension. It's not like a Japanese bike because of the swing arm position relative to the concentric point of the front sprocket. This will give you the best personal sense of what setting the chain tension appropriately should feel like. (Message edited by jdugger on March 11, 2014) |

Those who like to do their own work will love this bike, because its pretty much the last of a dying breed. There are NOT a ton of electrical gadgets to gum up the works, though I am really digging the traction/wheelie control algorithms. I watched most of the work being done (this time). Even though most shops clearly post a sign stating "the price is +50% if you watch and Double if give advice", Goe did not charge me any extra. I actually think a $180 first service cost is pretty good compared to: $198 zx-10 $205 RC8R $169 636 $350 Panigale $289 1098 $173 CBR1000RR (But that could just be my part of the country.) I find it fair since the parts alone was $70 and it does take a bit of time to do right. The CHAIN was NOT loose, the chain ADJUSTER locking nut was loose. Possible interesting bit of info here, the RX _might_ be equipped with wide band O2 sensors. I'll try to confirm the info today, but it sure looks an awful lot like a Bosch LSU 4.2 wide band sensor. It is definitely not a single wire narrow band unit. |

Bmw s1000rr was 275 if i remember correctly. They gave it back to me with the exhaust covered in oil. I was not impressed. Thats what you get when your BMW mechanic has yamaha tattoos all over his arms. This was in central Illinois. I had to go to St Louis for the next check up. I disconnected it and turned the key on, it's now showing an active fault for the solenoid, just like the 1125 used to do. Race ecm fixed that and I haven't had one on my 1125 for years. Still waiting on info about the race ecm (or programming software) for the 1190. |

In case any of you were wondering the aux power connector on the 1190RX is up front nested in the loom just below the fairing stay and instrument panel. It appears to use the same connector from the 1125r. This bike has at least two Canbus connectors, one in the tail under the pillion and the other under the instrument cluster. |
