1999 x1 runs like crap at idle... disconnected ET senor while bike is running and it smoothed out almost perfect!!! reconnected ET sensor an bike started missing again... Bad ET sensor? |

If you have bad INTAKE SEALS or BAD REAR EXHAUST GASKET it will cause the HEAD TEMPERATURE and 02 SENSOR to give bad outputs to the BRAIN BOX !!! |

Bad head temp sensor will give bike fits, though bad intake or exhaust will only affect O2 sensor. But unplugging it IIRC sends it into cold start which will add a ton of fuel. Need to look at AFV and intake seals. |

Other fun things to look at: You can ask the bike what temperature it is via ECMspy when it's cold. The intake sensor and the head temp sensor should be pretty much the same. (Room temperature or garage temperature) |

If you don't have ECMSpy, disconnect the sensor both at cold start and when the motor is at operating temperature. If the idle smoothed out in both cases then I think replacing the sensor is a good place to start. With ECMSpy you can watch the engine temperature rise from room temperature to around 160-180C. I doubt if marginal intake seals would behave as you described. |

Ok here is all of the info i have: 1999 X1, force exhaust system, forcewinder intake, Race ECM. Bike just started to stumble and run rich. fouled out the front plug. replaced plugs and ETS... bike started but had a wandering idle. bike seems to be running rich. AFV was at 116 after a 20 mile ride after being reset to 100. intake seals, exhaust seals are fairly new. sort of hear an intermitent ticking noise from the front cylinder area. bike runs AWESOME when given some throttle but the idle BS has to be fixed!! i have a full Kooks exhaust system for an X1, would this be a better system than the force? any advice/help is appreciated. |

You could try a TPS reset just to rule that out. |

make sure the ETS sensor wire is good. have seen them chaffed, broken. check the intake and exhaust again. Use propane gas...not lit...around the seals. If your idle increases... |

bad ETS will strand you and foul plugs. Its typical they will cause a bounce around of temps when failing. incorrect temp readings screw up everything. So watch in ecm spy for good steady increase and holds. " 1999 X1, force exhaust system, forcewinder intake, Race ECM. " Do a compression test, just make sure you got good compression in the cyls. Dont worry about occasional tick noise. Make sure your primary chain is adjusted right too. Your AFV is ok. its going to go there, we need that extra gas. Make sure your using good plugs for this bike. Dont forget plug wires. These should be changed every 5 years. You can check and compare resistance. Its worth replaceing plugs every couple of years. They wear and rob performance. Dont Skimp. At idle, a goofy fuel injector could cause this? Once you open throttle its not much of a problem ? Bikes are so sensitive. After all these years I would have RC fuel injection clean your fuel injectors and check the flow. Its also recommended by the factory to change all these sensors every five years of steady use YMMV. eat , ets, tps ?, O2 sensor , Timing every ten ? YMMV I would ask for help about the exh setup, I dont know anything about that one. (Message edited by mmmi_grad on February 22, 2014) |

OK, checked intake and exhaust gaskets with map gas... no leaks/change in idle. played with ECM spy and have the following: TPS can be set without engine running and hold a steady reading, when the engine is running it seems to be moving around with the unsteady idle. O 2 sensor and ET sensor seems to be reading correct in conjunction with eachother... exhaust temps checked with an infared thermometer read around 350 deg f in the back and 380 in the front. bike will only idle with AFV set at 135, i played with this reading while the bike was running and idle changes in accordance. fuel pump pressure is a steady 50 psi and fuel comes out in a steady rate. would a stock ECM map be good for my set up? anybody have suggestions... i may get another set of fuel injectors and see, i had this problem a while ago and the fuel injectors were all full of rubber from a broken down fuel hose. i changed the hose, had the injectors cleaned and checked and bike seemed to run much better. hmmmm?!?! |

What you are describing may be an improper TPS reset. And use a good spark plug. I think NGK is the best out there. Napa sells the proper one for your bike. Obviously this procedure is difficult when your bike doesn't want to idle normally! Here is how to do a proper TPS reset using ECMspy. First Make sure your engine is up to operating temperature. Approximately 180 degrees F using ECMspy. Shut the bike off at the ignition switch only Second Using ECMspy (keys activated), back off your idle adjustment screw to 0.0 degrees. This too can be difficult if you don't have an idle adjust cable. In some cases, you'll need to pull your seat and readjust your fuel tank to get to the idle screw. Third Now, make sure when you roll your throttle open slightly that there is no movement at the slide. You'll only be able to "see" this with ECMspy, so watch your laptop screen! RESET your TPS using the button on your ECMspy dashboard. Fourth Assuming you have remained with your warm engined bike, set the ECMspy degrees to approximately 5.1 on the screen. This will ballpark your idle. START your bike Adjust your idle to 900-1100 rpm's, using your idle cable or idle screw at the throttle body. You are now done with your TPS reset!

Both the Force and the Kooks are very open exhaust and the FI has a tough time compensating. Somewhere inn your "learned Fuel" area ---which is quite small on an X-1---you have a lean area causing it to add 16% more fuel EVERYWHERE! That would certainly cause rich running. Can you post screen shots of your maps? Like to see them, esp the rear. |

like I said, its going to go to 116 without a modded race map. |
