Things have been pretty quiet here ... is there a more active BLAST! board ??? I really enjoy the knowledge here. Use it or loose it ??? My 2002 bike has around 12,000 miles on it now ... is the drive belt and rear sprocket really good for 25,000 ??? Can OEM parts still be had, or are some aftermarket items any better ??? |

The recommended belt change is 15,000. Might last a lot longer, might break at 15,001 miles. I think I saw the belt for sale at $65, about the price of an O-chain, but lasting longer and performing better. Very few that I know of replace the sprocket with the belt. The belt is an easy roadside swap if needed and an extra can be easily carried. |

There is an aftermarket belt, but at $200 it's no bargain. |

I can imagine pretty bad things happening if the belt failed at 70 mph ... figure I should watch it for wear ... looks great now with shiny wear surface on the pulley. I'd hope that the belt would show signs of a problem before catastrophic failure. (Message edited by cgent on January 31, 2014) |

What happens at 70mph when the belt breaks is that you suddenly slow down, the broken belt is behind you on the ground, and you better be aiming for the side of the road before you stop - ask me how I know - lol EZ |

Lol! People complain: what if the belt breaks? Same as when a chain breaks, it falls off and you slow down OR it whips around and cracks your transmission case! I know which I'd prefer! (Just my plug in praise of belts!) |

I don't think they show any signs before they break* at least not that I've read. EZ? *though they can show signs, but it's not the norm. |

My main concern was that the belt would somehow wrap up in the rear wheel and stop it ... forcing a crash. But I guess the large rear sprocket (pulley) would preclude that, right ??? |

Well anything could happen. It's still more likely to happen with a chain than with a belt. I've never heard of this happening with either, but.... Keep also in mind that a belt carries less energy than a chain. So while a chain will keep going, a belt will quickly lose momentum. I would replace only the belt at 15k and carry the used as a spare (if you're actually worried). They are super easy to change. (Message edited by Gearheaderiko on February 01, 2014) |

Replace the belt if you see chips in the teeth and the rest as ErikO states. EZ |
