Yeah, I guess at 86K there are a number of reasons it may have to come apart. The rear base gasket was leaking too.

Does anyone know where to get the plug with the grease fitting in it to replace the output shaft seal? I researched it a while back, and I think someone in the UK makes them, but does not ship to the U.S. I can`t fully remember. I probably could get someone to turn me one on a lathe, if I pull a seal for the dimensions.

The double row bearing came out in two pieces due to my failed attempt at pulling the bearing without splitting the cases. I know, bad idea.

Also, there was still some grease in between the two needle bearings. Hard to see in the last pick.

Cool pictures, thanks for posting. I wonder how hard it will be to get that inner race off that 5th gear drive assembly now?

Heating the whole thing up in an oven should help. The 5th gear drive assembly will expand when hot, the race wrapping it will expand when hot, and the gap in between the two will expand when hot... so it is a net gain in terms of removing a stuck piece.

Those double row bearings must be insanely strong... that's different from the old tubers that used one big single row. Makes you wonder how it got crunched.

Yeah, hopefully I don't have to replace the whole shaft. The inner row was like new. Just the outer balls were crunched. Maybe something got in there past the seal? There was no leak though.

You have great access to weld something on it now anyway. I'd use that as a later resort, but I'd do it if I had too.

Left everything at the dealer. Only charging me $50 to press out the old races and press on the new bearing. Now to find a gasket kit. They can't get one until next Thursday. $146.

I fitted one on my 06 bike but I would not again. Why? The reason is because it is easy to remove the seal, check the oiling and then just replace it with a new one.

If you think you may have a problem do it every 10k miles or just squirt oil in through the middle, which you can cut into, of the seal and then re-seal it with something.

Old bearing off, new bearing pressed onto shaft and into case, so now reassembly can start! A big Thank You to Josh at Ventura Harley. Unfortunately I forgot to order gaskets! Thanks Al for getting my order out today. Looks like I'll just be cleaning stuff for now.

How are other things in there, the heads and stuff? Are you fitting new rings? Condition of your engine looks very similar to mine at similar mileage.

I'm just replacing the bearing and putting it back together. Cross hatch in cylinders is still very visible. I'd like to get 100k out of it before I do any major work. At that point, maybe just have a rebuilt motor ready to drop in, or lift it as it would be

If the bore honing marks are the same throughout the bores are good and all the other stuff is within spec then I, myself, see no reason to do anything else. It does, however, do no harm to change the piston rings and seals while you have the engine in bits.

Yeah, I thought about rings but wasn't sure if that would cause the cylinders to begin wearing at a faster rate.

So I have a question, if the motor is in a gear and you hold both the shaft the clutch rides on and the 5th gear shaft, then turn them back and forth against each other, how much play should there be?

Jugs are back on. Some confusion about head gasket o-rings though so I thought I would post the learnings here, although there seem to be a great many threads here and other sites about it. The newer version of the OEM gasket does not use the o-rings. Part #16770-84F. The bag should not contain any o-rings and should have a sticker that reads “DO NOT USE WITH O-RINGS”, although mine did not have the sticker. Basically, if the o-rings you have won't fit in the hole in the gasket, don't use them.

If you do need o-rings they appear to be either Viton or silicon (both are good to at least 400F) and the size, as best I can measure and match up, is 015.

Hi everyone. Brake, were there any warnings of the bearing going out at all? Since the time I had my engine back together, 5th gear has been popping out and once in awhile will get jammed in 3rd. They seem to give me the most trouble, but neutral is harder to find than I recall before I had the engine apart. Also, there seems to be a whine during freeway speeds, but maybe it's the helmet I'm using as I got it the same time I got the bike running again. The sound is like the fan is running. Lower speeds it's not there. Should I suspect the 5th gear bearing going out?

When it went on my M2 (I lost the inner bearings, not the outer one) it would whine even in neutral, and stick in gear.

The outer bearing will have different symptoms because it only turns when the rear wheel is turning. The inner bearings always see motion, even in neutral.
