Learned a valuable lesson about how hard a XB9 sucks air at 130 mph. I had used a piece of quality (mil spec 100 mph stuff) duct tape to seal the gap from snorkel hole to filter, only to find the majority of it down the velo stack after a good FAST 2 hr ride. Maybe if it had been 130mph stuff instead of 100 it would have held. Good ending to story, all old stuff seemed in one piece, and buddy made a real seal from a seal off back of a stock H-D big twin air filter. I don't know which shows more of my redneck ignorance, talking of the different "qualities" of duct tape, or owning up to using it in such a critical area. |

Ask Skully why his F3 race bike wouldn't run one day last year. |

Hey Fatpony, One thing I don't get is how did the duct tape get past the air filter? You were running one right?........Later Charlie |

duck tape is GOD's glue, gasket and allthings good. and redneck engineering has come up with things related speed. new engineering now is only proving that the rednecks were right all along. |

How did the tape get past the air filter? The snorkel hole is the air intake hole that runs throught the frame/tank on the left side of the bike. The tape would have stopped at the filter. You wouldn't happen to be referring to the cavity directly above the filter on a XB9 air cleaner cover? Please elaborate. Thanks. edited by xb9er on March 02, 2004 |

My guess is that he used the tape to cover the actual "intake to the airbox" hole... |

No. It wasn't tape related. But it was intake related. We had a good laugh about it. Shoulda heard us cursing that "darn inline four." It idled fine but wouldn't run for anything. |

I taped the snorkel hole to the baseplate ( because I could see daylight after removing the rubber snorkel). How the tape got sucked around the filter is a puzzle. I've got a K/N and a XB12 airbox. This was the 1st time I'd fooled with this setup. It didn't feel super tight, didn't take much pressure to lock the tabs down. I prob did a 1/2 ass job. It's MUCH tighter a fit now. The K/N on my X1 rattles around, so I didn't think it was as big a screwup as it was. |

I mean on the Buell... What happened with the IL4? I have one that won't idle and fouls plugs in the city but put over 500 miles on it in one day w/o a problem... The mod is a 4to1 Kerker pipe. I think I don't get enough velocity at low RPM's but a lot at higher RPM's. I can't/won't afford to replace the smallest jet as they want $35 each for them. I swapped out the midrange for a smaller one and left the upper end stock... Anyway, back to the tape... |

pony, still not getting a real clear picture of how duct tape made the trip THROUGH the air filter. is it likely that other debris has been passing into your engine also? you may want to rectify this situation before riding in any dusty conditions. good luck, dean |

I used 3/8" tubing split lengthwise and pressed down on top of the aluminum rim to make a seal. A little crude but it seems to be a tight seal. |

I took my snorkel out, I can see light...I know XB9er said he use 3/8" tubing spilt lenghtwise to seal the gap...is this gap a big deal do you think? What are some opinions on this...Its sunny and 80 in Phoenix today, going on a ride, going to try to avoid the moms in mini-vans... |

That daylight that you see is a pathway for hot air from the engine. I see it as a short circuit in the ram air intake system. It's better to get all the air from the scoop where it should be cooler. Is that heat significant to the street rider? Probably not, but hey, there isn't a whole lot of extra work or tinkering necessary on an XB so I had to find something to do after taking out the snorkel! |

Good point. If it hadn't had been such a nice day I would have hit the hardware store for some tubing. I did however notice a big difference post snorkel removal. Can't wait for the air box cover, filter and drummer...OH BOY ITS GONNA BE LIKE CHRISTMAS!!! |
