the upgraded side plate arrived today. Special thanks to Jim gilbert, first for having these made in the beginning in the first place and now, for sending me a set to re-engineer these things and bring them back into production. I will send them to the machinist the day after Christmas, he has promised to get the design measurements quickly and has said he will only need them one day. I will be returning plates to other folks that loaned them to me as well. I was in the garage this evening working on this, but the wife has said enough, time for me to get back to Christmas things.... thanks to Don Casto and Davefl - both sent stock plates to help provide spares n case someone that had a set of up graded plates needed stock ones to replace them with. Ill be sending your plates back quickly, I just want to hold on to one set long enough that in case the machinist wants to compare any measurements to stock I have a set to send him. thanks guys, and MERRY CHRISTMAS!! getting closer to an estimate and more importantly...plates for those that want them! |

I got the left plate removed and mocked up the upgraded plate with an x1 kickstand. I have a few modifications planned after mocking it up. 1) the kickstand retracts too far up and back and it actually retracts above and over the axle nut and swingarm, when you load up the suspension, even slightly by sitting on the bike the kickstand hits the axle nut, one of the other guys with the plate had mentioned this so I'm going to make a change to the back recessed ramp that the kickstand rests in when retracted to keep the kickstand from retracting so much, I took some measurements and by changing that ramp it pulls the kickstand down and out in its arc just enough to completely clear the swing arm and axle nut. 2) I'm going to try and incorporate an adjustable rubber stop or at least a fixed rubber stop for the kickstand to rest against. 3) I m going to tighten up the channel the kickstand rides in throughout its arc, its much too loose this plate was originally designed to use a stainless steel kickstand that American Sport Bike used to sell, don't know if the dimensions were any different, perhaps it was just an initial design weak point that would have cost too much to fix the first time around... not everyone that bought these plates used the stainless steel kickstand and someone else I spoke with confirmed the issue...I think it was Rex... now that its been mocked up and changes identified....its gong in a box, and off to the machinist first thing Thursday! |

Had a surprise today... I tried to mock up the foot pegs and out of three foot peg bases I tried none of them fit in the ovals cut into the upgraded side plates...Ill have to let Jim Gilbert know and see if he wants me to have is plates "fixed"..can anyone else confirm that the upgraded plates they bought had too tight of an oval hole cut and their foot pegs did not fit correctly?? |

Mailed the plates off to the machinist today, should have a design and estimate by the middle of next week! |

I fixed your 1) with a piece of heater hose, cut into a C and inserted into the retracted-stand channel, giving the stand a "bumper" in addition to keeping it from over-retracting. IIRC, my pegs fit fine...but it's been a while and I probably drowned that particular brain cell a long time ago |

I have an update on the plates! $800.00 for a set, $400.00 for a left plate only. If we can get a bunch of folks in on this I can get the price down to somewhere around 750.00 possibly. Jolly - 1 full set |

I'll take a left hand plate. I'm in the UK but can provide a US address if that is an issue. Let me know when and how you'd like payment. Thank you for arranging this. Simon |

>>>this year my mad money is going towards more Gibson guitars. Careful . . . I got carried away and bought 4 in the last 3 weeks. :-) I feel bad . . but not THAT bad.. . . after what the federal government did to Gibson a bunch of folks got on board and have been supporting the American icon . . . Gibson did their part by blowing out the 2013 models at unbelievable prices. (Message edited by court on January 04, 2014) |

Ill be contacting the machinist to have him begin the CAD drawings for the plates so that we can get this started. the price does include a steel pivot pin like the ones on all tubers S1 and forward. flat face, with a retaining ring on the back side. Doncasto - I am keeping your plates as a baseline truth data set in case anything needs to be evaluated against stock, once I get a finished product or enough confidence that nothing needs to be measured against stock I will send yours back. Stevefl - you should have received yours in the mail by now (shipped UPS - tracking number provided via email last week) sorry Simond I had a typo above, silly smart phone wanted to rename you Dimond..here is the list without the typo. Current count: Jolly - 1 full set KC Zombie - 1 full set Buelljunkie - 1 full set Doncasto - 1 full set Simond - 1 left plate only as a passing anecdotal note this original thread was first started 31 July 13 ... almost 6 months later the part will be resurrected and improved with some slight changes!! though not the only thread on this topic for sure over the course of the S2 life, this has been a 6 month personal quest! |

I know the price sounds expensive, but the last attempt to resurrect this was by the person that originally had these created, his estimate at that time was 2,000.00 for a set based on the number of hours of design time and the cost of aluminum that gets turned into chips... the plus side is that these plates are ONLY about 800.00 for a set....if your bike drops because of a kickstand related tip over you damage the following at a minimum.. front fairing left mirror left hand grip Clutch lever possibly the clip on fuel tank cover saddle bags if you have them Nothing is going to be perfect because it isn't a factory design with hours and hours and hours (days?) of design and testing..this is a reproduction with the approval of the original guy that did this to fix a known issue with the kickstand at the time. None of the original upgraded plates were met with significant issue and no complaints so we at least have that working in our favor. I am working to make improvements over that design and make these even more finished that the original fix. I'm not looking to make money off of this venture, its a part I want and need and I'm passing on as true a cost as possible. I have a 300.00 up front design cost that I have to eat to get this done. your cost is about 800.00 a set, my cost is over 1,000.00 Current count: Jolly - 1 full set KC Zombie - 1 full set Buelljunkie - 1 full set Doncasto - 1 full set Hootowl - 1 full set Simond - 1 left plate only |

the design work will be done this week, I should have CAD drawings to review by the end of the week. I will pay the up front $1,000.00 price for the first set and run a mock up and test, cant ride the bike...(if you're following MyS2 project..you understand why..) but I will park this thing on the drive way and at odd angles to test the design for stability and then make any recommended changes and press with final production. I will need people to pay up front. the best way to keep the cost down is to capture the cost of the plate and then set a shipping price exactly for each person and location. it doesn't matter how many people order a set of plates, my cost is $1,000.00, as I have to order a one-off for mock up and testing, the differential pricing for quantity ordered gets passed on to you guys. |

I can vouch for the original design of the Gilbert plates,as far as functionality goes.I've had my Gilbert plates on three different S2/S2T's with great result.I have parked downhill and forgotten to put the bike in gear with no problem. My bikes have never fallen due to a problem with the side plate/kickstand angle.I recently sold an S2 with the original side plate/kickstand and with my lack of strength due to health issues it was a struggle to get the bike off the side stand. Not so with the Gilbert plate/X1 sidestand.I have been well pleased during over ten years of ownership. In the link http://www.doncasto.net/DonCastosS2ConventionalWis dom.html#S2 under "Sidestand" The Yellow Jacket Pearl bike wears the stock plate/sidestand and the Parkway Blue bike wears the Gilbert plates w/X1 sidestand, the difference is pretty dramatic. |

Please add me in for a set. Don't know if anyone else is looking for a set with no pass pegs, but that would be preferable. What kickstand will these use when finished? Thanks, Kevin Meath kmbuell |

talked to the machinist today, he has been busy with current on-going projects and digging out from the snow and making the measurements for the plates. should have something back by next week and possibly even the original upgraded plates that he is using for initial measurements so I will be able to get those back to Gilbert once I get a mocked up set of the new/new design for comparison. Once he completes the drawings I will have him look at a set of single rider plates, don't want to overload him right now with different versions, I prefer to wait and make them single option changes from base line design. |

I received the CAD drawings today of the left and right plates. I'll work any additional changes into the design if required, then the next step, have the first set made and mock it up! I really am getting close!!
