As per the 99/00 manual the oil feed line is supposed to be plugged during extended storage to prevent oil seeping past the check ball into the flywheel compartment. Anyone ever done this? How bad is it if oil gets into the flywheel? Is it worse than just draining the oil for the winter? Thanks for any advice. |

my oil has always drained back into the crankcase...not just while in storage, but literally within a few minutes of shutting the bike off. Can't see it causing any problems as long as you remember to check the oil level right after shutting the bike off (to avoid overfilling) |

All HDs tend to do that if not run long enough - if it is happening very quickly, there is an old trick for lapping the seat in the oil pump like a valve using a olde check ball stuck to a hunk of welding rod and good old fashioned clover compound (aka valve cutting compound) Obviously, doing that should entail removing the oil pump first and cleaning it thoroughly after, since most of us don't really want valve compound in the oil. If oil drains into the crankcase, the worse result is the half quart or so of oil that the bike will puke out next spring. Nothing worse, in fact you maybe could argue that having the big end bearings soaked in oil would prevent winter rust. |

Just go out & run the motor a little every 2-3 weeks. Keeps everything moving. |
