Ok, starting to diagnose the issues with the X1 I bought off here over the weekend. I'm also having my first experiences ever with ECM Spy. 1. I'm getting an error code "ETS shorted to supply" and the check engine light is on. Is this a typical failure mode for the ETS? Also it looks like the sensor is somewhere near the center of the head, not very accessible. The service manual shows it near the head bolts and accessible. What's up with that? 2. Should the TPS measurement be updating dynamically? Even when the bike isn't running? My reading is not changing hardly at all through the full range of throttle. Do TPS go bad like this? Or is there something weird about configuring ECM Spy and it's not refreshing correctly? 3. It has the race ECM in it. Do these ever get confused and need "remove power" resets? And yes - it's reluctant to start, and not running too fantastic when it is running... Thanks, Steve |

Ok, I looked at the service manual a little more and see that "late 2000" models have the ETS near the center of the head. Guess that's what I've got... |

ECMSpy is a weird program - I forget what you have to do with it but you have to go online or something to do the TPS reset and to show the voltage moving (or at least you do with the free version that I have). Yes, the voltage should change when you're rotating the throttle. Do not reset or remap a race ECM. It sounds like you need a new ETS and the slotted socket to change it out. |

'99-late'00 ets is located here.
'01-'02 are located "down the chimney" and require gas tank removal to access it. Do a search on the tps reset, pretty simple to do. |

Turn key to on, turn run/off switch to run, turn on ECMSPY on computer, connect USB cable to computer then connect to port under seat, in this order. Click mouse on set of keys in upper left corner of ECMSPY program and you should see a small box appear that shows "closed loop". At this time you should see live time readings. If you want to do the TPS reset, go to this youtube link and it will show you step by step. Beware that after reset, you will need to click on the keys in upper left corner again to see real time readings. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&so urce=web&cd=6&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CFYQtwIwBQ&url=ht tp%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Di33__Qkvh n4&ei=Qb-GUqi7Aem-2QXAuoGoCw&usg=AFQjCNELOivFhLIlU kDmjuMieQ1WaiQscQ&bvm=bv.56643336,d.b2I |

Thanks for the help. Maybe a dumb question but I couldn't see an idle stop screw, at least not with the the gas tank on. Where's the best access point? |

Nowhere accessible, that's where it is! They have the cable zip tied somewhere over by the air scoop on the left. I always go with the race air filter and relocate that cable to the right so I can access it with my fat little fingers. |

Thanks for the advice about hitting the keys - that indeed made it refresh in real time. My reading is zero when the throttle is closed so i guess I have some adjusting to do... |

Do a proper reset with the engine at operating temperature. If that is not possible, do a reset anyway and then open the throttle plate/butterfly (using the idle screw) until you get around 5.1% reading. |
