Every once in a while when sifting from 1 to 2 i hit neutral instead and then a second or third time it will go to second. The guy I bought the bike from says he never had the issue and that it was probably the way I am shifting. I am used to the sift lever being a little higher as on my blast. M2 2000 with 20K miles, well taken care of. Any thoughts - greatly appreciated. (Message edited by mhlunsford on October 28, 2013) |

1. adjust the shifter higher, so it's in the position you're used to. 2. check adjustment on the clutch and the primary chain. (If needed, add step 0.5 - purchase shop manual before putting a wrench on the bike). |

You should make sure the shifter linkages are lubed too. 20K miles is about as long as the bushing for the shifter lever last too. If there is play in the lever, you will have lost motion and therefore shifting will be sucky. One other thing: I had to remove the paint from the frame where the footpeg mounts. It was getting chewed up and making the boomarang lever sticky. |

Keep an eye on that........That is what happens when the engagement dogs in the tranny get rounded and don't shift very well. Ask me how i know. wait until it starts giving a false neutral from 4th-5th gear down shifting. then you really got problems. Do all listed above by the other members and watch it. I ended up pulling out my tranny and sending it into zippers to have it re-built and all the gears back-cut. Good luck! |

Does this happen only when you shift at high engine speed like above 4500 or all the time? I'm beginning to experience this issue only when I shift at high RPM. I've got 22K on my '00 X1. |

It could be the shifter détente needs adjusting. You'll need a cut away primary cover and the manual to do the adjustment. |

went for second ride today and noticed I had more problems when the bike was warm and noticed that the normal clunk was not there when I missed second gear. Detente plate ? how hard is it to replace or adjust ? |

Try this: put a ruler alongside the shift lever and with the motor off measure the amount of travel in both the upwards and downwards direction. The idea is to have the same amount of free travel in either direction. If you get 1" down, 1.5" up you've found your problem and then you need to tackle the adjustment which is kind of tedious on these bikes. |

Get the shifter upgrade kit if you can find one. Makes a lot of difference. |
